Catacombs in Rome

I have always wanted to see Catacombs in Rome...Has anyone been? How far from city center are the catacombs at Via Appia? I have limited time in Rome next week, Thank you!

Close to the city, easy to do, interesting. I did two catacombs and short walk on the Via Appia in a long morning. A guide book will tell you which bus to catch.

I've been to both San Callisto and San Sebastiano catacombs several times. They are worth a visit if you are interested in them. I prefer San Sebastiano because it has some beautiful examples of Ancient Roman mauseleums. If your time is limited, pick one catacomb to visit and take a cab out there. Buses are very infrequent. Last July, we waited for one for almost an hour. Had it not been for two tired little girls with us, we could have walked there and visited the catacombs in that same amount of time.

How much was the cab ride?

You could visit the Catacombs of Priscilla which are located in Rome about 1 1/2 km from Villa Borghesse.
