Castle recommendations

I am interested in some recommendations for castles to visit along our route in Germany.

Our itinerary is as follows:
*Munich for a few days
*Train to Nurmberg
*Nurmberg for a few days
*Rent a car and drive to the alps (via a combination of the Romantic Road and the highway), staying just over the border from Fussen in Austria for a few days.
*Return to Munich

We will visit Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, but we are interested in maybe wander around on our own.

Add another "Ludwig" castle to your list, Linderhof; it was his most personal home and is fascinating to visit. The grounds and fountains are splendid, including a sunken grotto where the king rowed himself on the lake while listening to the music of Richard Wagner. There's also a Moorish kiosk with a peacock throne inside.

All in all, well worth a visit.

Totally agree with the merits of visiting Linderhof.

Best wishes,

Rex

Thanks for the recommendation for Linderhof. I will put it on our list. Anybody else?

The castles don't have to be spectacular or anything - just old and interesting :)

The Residenz in Wurzburg (northernmost town on the Romantic Road and fairly close to Frankfurt) is beautiful and the stunning Tiepolo fresco was just restored.
The Festung Marienberg (Fortress Marienberg) is more of a true castle and is also lovely. Beautiful views of the Main River and Old Main Bridge, as well as the historic center of Wurzburg.

If you're going to be in Nuernberg for a few days, take a day trip to Bamberg. Bamberg is a wonderful destination with a lovely Altstadt. And it has a nice, old castle.

My family lived in Bamberg for 3 years in the late 50s and early 60s, and we often visited Altenburg Castle.

One of the main castle attractions for me was the resident brown bear, Poldi. We would throw Poldi eggs and he'd catch them and down them in the blink of an eye.

Poldi is long gone, but the castle is still there.

It's 35 or 45 minutes by train.

Excellent - thanks!

Besides the Kaiserburg in Nuremberg, how about a visit to Colberg? It's between Ansbach and Rothenberg ODT.

I think you'll have to travel by bus to get there but looks interesting.

In reference to MarkvonKramer's suggestion: Burg Colmberg is a very nice castle hotel, and it has a decent restaurant, too. Nice views from many of the rooms.

I loved the old medieval castle in Meersburg on the Boden See or Lake Constance.
