Castle in Bath?
Is there a Castle that you would recommend in Bath or very close by?
|
donnae-b - you keep asking about castles. Do you actually mean "Castles" or do you mean stately homes and palaces?
Castles were built for defense and there aren't many near Bath. The only one close to Bath that I can think of is Farliegh Hungerford which is outside Trowbridge. It is an interesting ruin with a chapel. |
Berkeley Castle isn't far from Bath. It is a real castle with a dark history.
|
Even a little closer than Berkeley would be Corfe Castle..about 65 miles..
And I love the town itself |
If a stately Home would suffice, try Lacock Abbey, built around a medieval abbey and cloister. It's only about 15 miles from Bath
|
Donna - One of the most picturesque in Somerset is NUNNEY CASTLE - about 15 miles south of Bath near Frome.
If you're looking for a stately home head for LONGLEAT HOUSE, home of Lord Bath - near Warminster. Steve |
HI Steve...
Nunney is one I've missed so I'm putting it on my list for our Spring trip to Dorset!! |
Hi Jody - It's only a small one - but very photogenic.

Hi yourself, Steve..
The spring trip just got postponed till Fall..Italy is calling my name for early spring now! |
Dorset or Italy? Hmmm - close call ... NOT!
Italy calling my name too ;) - and I was only there last month ... |
Isn't there a fake castle (or facade) on a hill visible from Bath? Anyone remember its name and the story behind it? Thx.

You mean Ralph Allen's folly or sham castle. Here it is:
