Castle Howard from York

Still working out last minute ideas for our long-planned trip. We'll have some time to spare -- I think -- in York. Is a quick trip/tour out to Castle Howard worth it? If so, any tips on finding a way to get out there from York without a car?

You all have been so helpful. I really appreciate it.

We were driving on our trips, so don't know of other ways to get there, although the tourist bureau in York will certainly be able to help you. It is definitely worth it, lovely home and grounds.

Hi
I went to Castle Howard from York by bus, that was part of a Britrail
daytrip package from London: train to York, bus to Castle Howard. It was definitely worth it, I only wish I'd had more time to explore the grounds.
If you are in the US, try calling
888 BRITRAIL.

Castle Howard is fantastic and definitely worth a visit. Another place I would suggest, however, is Fountains Abbey near Ripon in N Yorkshire - I think maybe 20-30 miles from York. I do not know the best way to get there (other than car) - but if you are tired of country houses (unlikely though!) Fountains is the country's biggest monastic ruin with a very beautiful water garden. More on www.fountainsabbey.org.uk.

Thanks a million, Elaine and Alex. The web sites for Castle Howard and Fountains Abbey are great. The one for CH is the best I've ever seen for that kind of property. And I'd never heard of FA so it's now on my list for my next trip to England. Many thanks.

The website http://www.york.gov.uk/outabout/trav...bus/index.html

Should give you the information you require regarding contacts for buses. I think it is East yorkshire that runs the service (the Coastliner I think). I don't think buses are that frequent

I live in York and I took some American friends there a couple of weeks ago. It was very nice

I do think it is worth hiring a car - there a good number of car hire companies with offices in york www.yell.co.uk or www.scoot.co.uk will help you find one.

Otherwise you will miss out on the North Yorkshire Moors which is a National Park. Sutton bank worth a visit for the view.

York is great - apart from www.york.gov.uk look at www.thisisyork.co.uk for more info
