castle accomodations
 

Help! I have two problems. One is the time of year that we want to go to Germany... Feb.. and the other is that we want to stay in a castle that isn't so commercial. Anyone know of a castle with a personal touch that older kids ( 12 and 14 ) would like? I know a lot of accomodations shut down at that time of year but I am hoping against hope.

Well, this place is a real castle that has been converted to a hotel, so it is commercial. But it is very nice and has lovely views if you don't get the cheapest rooms. It has a very good restaurant as well. It's a short drive east of Rothenburg o.d. Tauber.

If you can't find one that isn't commercial, then this is one I can recommend.

Every castle that had accommodation cost a fortune, at least by my standards. I'm not surprised by that: the upkeep of the places must be fearfuuly expensive.

Castle Gutenfels in Kaub.

Not at all commercialized.

Eight of us stayed there in 2002.

I had a very good experience at Parkhotel Wasserburg-Anholt - - you can find more info at www.burg-hotel-anholt.com - - a real
castle with a giant moat, and its own (little) museum. I have some reason to believe that its management may have chamged in the past year or two - - so investigate it like any other anecdotal information here. Do your own "due diligence"!

I'm not sure if these two castle-hotels are open at that time of the year however-- We stayed at 2 on the Rhine. 1) Castle Hotel Schonbury
2)Castle Leibenstein.
The 2 are very different, however neither would be described as commerical.Our kids were 11 & 13 when we stayed at both. Castle Leibenstein is more "ruined" They had a very nice family room on the top floor/attic of the castle. It was basicallly 2 rooms with a bathroom in the middle. Schonburg was more plush (and twice the price). They had a very nice family room which was one large room but L-shaped. The kids favourite feature here was a bathroom hiden behind a book shelf. They still talk of this room!! Our kids love staying in old castles that you can explore on your own. Leibenstein allow for more 'authentic' exploration.
