Castle Accomodations?
 

My 12 year old son and I would like to have the experience of staying in an authentic old castle (ghosts and all). We have 1 week and practically anywhere in Europe at our disposal. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

We had thought to do the same thing. I believe you find accommodations in castles in England, Scotland, or Ireland. I know there are websites, but don't remember what they are. Marilyn

Tracy,<BR>www.scottscastles.com has great listings for castles in Scotland. You can pick from hotels, B&amp;B's, self catering and more. I hear Stuart castle located near Inverness has a couple good ghosties in it.<BR> Kathy

Tracey,<BR><BR>This isn't a palce you can stay - - and I have never heard of a place you can stay that has its own "haunted" legend - - but Mortemer Abbey, in Haute Normandie is a pleasant "castle" - - actually the ruins of an old abbey, complete with a great legend and cheezy still-life light-and-sound displays scattered throughout the length of its tour, just perfect for a 12 year old.<BR><BR>I can't find an internet reference (in English) for the Abbey directly, but this place<BR><BR>http://www.normandy-tourism.org/gb/lodge/eure/st_paul.html<BR><BR>is nearby, and refers to it on their web page.<BR><BR>And here's a web page in French (no too hard to follow), which tells about how the place is haunted by the spirit of Mathilde, the "emperess".<BR><BR>Best wishes,<BR><BR>Rex<BR>

Several years ago, we did a trip through Portugal staying a various castles and monasteries.

The ch&acirc;teau de Puymartin in the Dordogne has its own ghost - la Dame Blanche - and lovely accommodations. You can check it out at http://www.best-of-perigord.tm.fr/sites/chateaux/puymartn/francais/puyma_fr.html<BR><BR>Your son would also have a ball in the surrounding area, visiting prehistoric caves and canoeing on the Dordogne river and visiting the Hundred Years War castles exhibits.

In response to your castle lodging ? I am also interested in that. I am planning a trip to Romania next summer and there are many old, gothic castles there some of which you can spend the night in. Yes you can probably go to the usual places like England, Scotland, Ireland, etc...however, Romania I believe has more appeal especially in terms of castles. A castle I would recommend-Hunedoara Castle in S.W. Romania. It is said to be the scariest castle in the world! If you want more info on castles in omania feel free to Email me @ [email protected]
