Castle accomodation in Poland

I am enquiring if anybody here has had any experiences staying in castle accomodation in Poland?

You may find it hard to get anyone's actual experience on this; I know because there is a place I have had my heart set on for a while - - but have not made it there yet - - nor have I read any accounts from anyone who has:

www.hotelspoland.com/castle_palace/niedzica - - this place looks so cool to me. But it is not so very close to anywhere (Krakow is 1.5-2 hours away).

The closest to an actual personal experience account that I can ever recall seeing is a post from "PeterB" - - http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...mp;tid=1294089 about a castle hotel named Lancut, which he describes as "really nice place" (no other details)

He cites a URL which I couldn't get to work now, but this does:

I checked out the castle at Niedzica.
I agree with you completely.
It's close enough to Krakow for me to make it an option.
Thats the sort of place I have been looking at. They seem to be all over the place in Poland.
I am planning on travelling through Poland for around 10 days driving from Krakow to Warsaw to Massuria Lakes area then on to Gdansk and then Berlin.
You didnt say in your post if you have been to Poland? If you have I would be very interested in any ideas or experiences you may wish to share.

My sole foray into Poland so far was for only about 24 hours in May 203, into the area around Jelenia Gora. Stayed at a little "pensonjat" (agritourism, sort of) - - www.pension-nostalgia.ch (the website ends in ".ch" because the owner lives in Zurich).

Note: NO English and not really any Czech or German either. But the house-minder has a heart of gold. And dictionaries will get you along, with a few laughs.

Alas, no castles on this very short venture - - sort of an "overnight day trip" from Prague.

After a little bit more trip research I am considering Wroclaw as a destination.
Have you stayed at the castle you mentioned?

I learned of this zamek through much planning I have done for a 3 week trip across southern Poland this fall, Rough Guide, Eyewitness and Blue Book, internet, etc. We start in Krakow and end in Wroclaw by auto. This zamek has some owner/relationship with Hotel Tumski in Wroclaw which is how I connected with it. Both appear quite charming but Tumski was full. We will not make it as far as Kliczkow in our journey. Personally Wroclaw appeared to us as a absolutely do not miss!

Lancut is a town in SE Poland, perhaps 75 miles 2-1/2 hours east of Krakow. There is a sort of castle-mansion type building there.

Btw, it's true that Niedzica Castle is situated far away from any cities (Krakow is the closest but it's still relatively far away, especially for a short holiday). However, the Castle is picturesquely surrounded by Pieniny Mountains. The museum at the castle is interesting. I'm not sure if the artifacts are now labeled in English. When I last visited in 2001 all the signs were in Polish. Still, I think that the castle is worth visiting. It's not your beautiful, palace-like castle, but rather a true little bit eerie medieval castle (just perfect!; they have preserved torture chambers there.) Supposedly, last Inca king's daughter's will was found on the location (who knows how it got there). Anyway, there is a lot of great hiking to be done in the Pieniny Mountains area (i.e. Wawoz Homole - Homole Canion; Sokolica Mountain, Trzy Korony Mountain - Three Crowns Mountain etc.). You can also take a scenic Dunajec gorge rafting trip (you don't do the rafting. The skilled rafters do all the rafting. It's not a rough white-water experience, but rather a beautiful 2.5-3 hour trip on the water with some incredible views of high cliffs of the Dunajec gorge).

Also, I'm not sure if you have that in your itenerary, but I would recommend going to Zakopane from Krakow and visiting Tatra Mountains (truly spectacular).

I have checked out the sites listed and they are great.

I am planning on travelling north from Hungary with a motorhome, so I think we will cross the Tatra's so will definately be looking to stopover there.

I am intending on travelling from Hungary to Krakow then from Krakow to Warsaw then north to Ketrzyn Mazzury lakes area then across to Gdansk then not sure if will follow the coast to Berlin Germany or head south to Torun then Poznan then onto Wroclaw.
Then drive from Wroclaw to Berlin.

I intend to take around 10 to 14 days to do this trip.

Do you or any other posters have experience in any of these areas? Would be very interested to hear any experiences or suggestions. Especially regarding driving conditions.
