Castelorotto
 

Hi all,

Taking my parents on a European tour, making Rome my last stop for 6 days... I however, would like to spend no more than 3 days in Rome and hoping to be able to make it to Castelorotto from Rome and the important part I want them to see the town with the beautiful green landscape as shown in many of the pictures out in the web.

Will anyone here be able to provide feedback on best way from Rome to Castelorotto and back to Rome?

Also, will mid May (10-16) be of good weather to be able to see the landscape as some of the advertised photos?

If you are visiting Northern Italy, Castelrotto is certainly doable. But not from Rome.

Where will you be before Rome? Anywhere in the north?

The valleys will be quite green, but the significant sight will be the Dolomite mountains. I think those valleys are generally pretty green, unless they're snow covered.

We spent two nights in Castelrotto (Kastelruth) April 27 & 28 2014. Glad we stayed there on a Rick Steves tour. If the weather is good, there is a hike to several mountain churches. The view is wonderful.
If you can train from Rome to Verona or Bolzano and rent a car, going to Castelrotto would be easy. I felt like I was in an Switzerland or Austria small town ski resort. Please check our RS Italy travel guide.

You could find cloudy or foggy weather at nearly any time of year in the mountains, so there's no guarantee that you'll get a good view when you have only a day or two to spend there.

So where will you be before Rome?

Castelrotto - Rome takes 5 3/4 - 6 hrs by public transport

Change at Balzano/Bozen

If you really, really have your heart set on doing this it is doable but challenging and tiring. You would need to take a night train from Rome to Bolzano/Bozen departing 22:35 arriving 09:22. The trip includes two early morning transfers in Venice and Verona. In Bolzano/Bozen you will need to catch the bus in front of the station (actually at a stop off to the right of the station). You buy the tickets on the bus. IMHO, to make it worthwhile you will need to stay for two nights to be able to recover from the trip,to see the great sights and to do a little hiking. The return night train departs Bolzano/Bozen at 20:31 arriving in Rome 06:35. That trip requires 2 late night transfers.

I would recommend more time or a separate trip.

You can fly from Rome to Verona, and then take a fairly shor train ride north, or rent a car at the airport.

Why suggest the nearly 11-hour night trains between Rome and Bolzano with the multiple transfers??? The fast train during the day takes only 4.5 hours with no transfers.

Thanks all for proving your feedback. I will look into the the flights and fast train options, as I will really like to make it over there. If not, then I will settle for next time and take a quick trip to amalfi where I've already been. However, will hope to find a way to make it to Castelorotto as it's a place I've never been.

There is NO overnight train from Rome to Bolzano/Bozen. The train mentioned by Jim goes to Udine instead of Bolzano/Bozen.

Rome - Castelrotto BY PLANE (FCO - VRN):
Roma Ternini dp 7.35 - FCO dp 9.40 - VRN ar 10.40, dp 11.30 - Verona Porta Nuova 11.45/12.09 - Bolzano/Bozen 14.22/14.42 - Castelrotto ar 15.28

Rome - Castelrotto all BY TRAIN:
Roma Termini dp 8.45 - Bolzano/Bozen 13.14/13.27 - Castelrotto ar 14.13

I recommended the night train to preserve the daytime hours given the limited time. Neckervd is correct in that the night train is from Rome to Udine hence the transfers in Venice and Verona as correctly pointed out.

Also, there is no route ALL BY TRAIN to Castelrotto. The Bolzano/Bozen leg must be by bus, taxi or car...Castelrotto being high up in the Dolomites. I've been there three times...never saw a train.

Sorry, I thought that everybvody knows that there is no train to Seiseralm. I meant all by train (up to Bozen) opposite to train to FCO - plane to VRN - bus to Verona PN and train to Bozen.
The Bozen - Kastelruth bus runs about every 30 minutes. But it's not forbidden to rent a car or to take a taxi for this last leg.

As to the overnight train, it's a good idea to change at Venice SL instead of Padova, so one has to leave the bed at 5am only, instead of 4.30am.
However,l I would rather take the train Rome dp 17.45 - Bozen ar 22.14 and sleep there.
