Cassis, Nice & Rex....

Rex, your descriptions of Cassis sounds like a "must see". I will be staying in Nice w\o a car. Possible to take a train from Nice to Cassis? How long a trip? Should I plan to spend a night? Would prefer not to but..I'll be on my own & traveling in early June. Easy to get an inexpensive accomodation spur of the moment in Cassis? Thanks in advance...

Huh? I don't think I have ever mentioned Cassis - - and I have never been there. It WOULD be true that I love

kirs and kirs royaux (made from creme de Cassis)

Confiture de cassis (black currant jam)

I once had a crush on a girl named Cassie

and there is a winery mentioned on the Provence wine trail, referenced on the www.french-wines.com web site - - located in Cassis - - but I never mentioned it here - - Domaine de la Ferme Blanche, 13714 Cassis.

Here's a list of Vignobles de Cassis from www.provenceweb.fr (which I have indirectly mentioned before) - - http://www.provenceweb.fr/f/mag/terr...les/cassis.htm - - additionally, the community of Cassis has its own website online, with a page devoted to vineyards and winemaking - - www.cassis-online.com/vins.htm (in French only).

There is also a litsing of hotels on this same site.

I am puzzled as to how you connect this interesting little town with me, but I hope that this helps you in some way.

Best wishes,

Rex
If Rex had done a search for "Cassis" he would have found that five days ago he posted the following:

"On the coast a few kilometres west of Bandol, you'll find the charming village of Cassis and the AOC area of the same name. Its situation is absolutely superb, and the rocky inlets themselves are alone worth coming to France for! And having a glass of the white wine of Cassis in a small café in the square under the shade of a parasol is such a memorable experience....."

In all fairness, he did attribute this to www.french-wines.com.

Well, I'll be darned - - found the thread you were talking about! Now it's topped, too.

Cassis is a delightful town to visit. We stayed there only two nights, and wished we'd had more time! The sights, shops and people were great!

At the recommendation on those on the Francophile Forum, we stayed at Les Roches Blanches - words cannot describe this hotel or the wonderful view from our terrace - it took our breath away.

Am I wrong? Mar 31st, 2001 02:41 AM

I thought creme de cassis (pronounced with the "s") was produced in the Dijon area. The town on the other hand is pronounced without the "s".

"Am I Wrong?": Yes, you are. ;)

The fruit, the liqueur, and the town are all pronounced with the final "s".

By the way, Lois, Cassis is lovely. I can't advise you on the train travel, but I will recommend that if you get there, you take a boat ride out to see the "calanques" -- these are the "rocky inlets" mentioned in the quotation, and they're gorgeous.

Happy trails!

- Quicksilver -

Lois,
You can take a train through Toulon to Cassis. According to SMCF it's a 2h29mn ride.
Enjoy!

You didn't ask but this might be a help.
Nice is one of my special places - was there last December. Our deal included a hotel but the next time I go I intend to stay in Hotel Helvetia - very central ( almost next to Gallerie Lafayette), very clean and very affordable. Looked at several rooms and decided the manager might also be the owner - and very interested. I believe I can look up an e-mail address if you are interested.

Cassis is a great day trip. I took the local train from Marseille and it runs about once an hour. Be warned though that the train station is a good 2 mile walk from the waterfront. There were absolutely no taxis at the train station and the ticket window was also closed! It was a long, but worthwhile walk. Getting back to the station by taxi was easy as plenty were to be found in the center of town. You might want to arm yourself with the local taxi cab phone number so when you arrive in Cassis, you won't need to walk if you don't care to.
Ellen
