You would be better off paying in euros at the point of sale.

jean, you would be better off if the vendors gave the same exchange rate as your credit card company, but they don't.

jean, I believe I have read here that some credit card companies are now imposing a fee for non-U.S. transactions even when they are in dollars.

An interesting post; and always fun to learn of others experiences. We travel once or twice a year to Europe, and lived overseas for 5 years (WAY back).
It's mostly "expected" by the hotel for one to look at their room first upon checkin...they don't care at all. Some people want a view out the window, others don't care etc! There is such a varience in room overseas, compared to our cookie cutter rooms in the states.
Out of 9 hotels stays (a lot of beautiful Best Westerns, historical buildings, etc) in Germany, Austria, Italy this past April...we were only billed ONCE in dollars. I asked each time to make sure it was in EURO., and at the one place they told me twice it would be in EURO. I even called back the following night when it was discovered on my bill. They think it helps the customer to bill dollars!!!
The bottom line: when the credit card bill came last week there was a slightly higher total on the exchange when the hotel did it...but not a LOT to warrant fussing about. We used our USAA card which has 0% conversion...and only the 1% required by Mastercard. and it was all in prefect order with only 1%.
In regard to the "making lunch" from the buffet breakfast. I know some people are sneaky and do make sandwiches..but I've always thought that was stealing.! Maybe an apple or orange that wasn't eaten at breakfast, but it boggles by mind as to stuffing "lunch" in a bag at breakfast.
Well, to each his own.......and I really don't care. Just jawin' by thoughts!
Cassandra, your report was thorough and interesting . Traveling in other countries is fun, isn't it?....and keeping a sense of humor really comes in handy. In many ways things often work better overseas with technology etc.., and some ways better in U.S.! And since we are guests in their country we ADAPT! and have fun.
