Cashel vs Kilkenny
 

I am having a hard time right now with my last minute preps for my trip which I leave for in 2 days!!!! Ok here is the deal on Days 2 and 3 we will be staying overnight in Dublin. Then we will be traveling South on Day 4 I was planning on visiting the monstary at Glendalough and then Kilkenny City and staying over night. On Day 5 we were going to head to Cashel and stay over night before heading South to Cork the following day as I have a friend who lives in Cork City. However, I do not have a reservation yet for the fourth night in Kilkenny City as I do not want to stay in the outskirts. I wanted to know if you thought I would be out of my mind to leave Dublin spend the day in Kilkenny and then in early evening drive to Cashel stay over night and then wake up and do Cashel the next day which would mean 2 nights in Cashel and not the unpacking of Kilkenny and then another B&B a night later. Thanks for all your help.

I don't think that's a bad idea at all. It took us about 2 hours to drive to Dublin from Kilkenny (this was late morning on a Sunday). The drive to Cashel from Kilkenny is less than an hour, I believe. In Kilkenny, you could tour the castle and then wander about the town. I think lodgings are expensive in the city center; we paid the most there of all the 5 places we overnighted, and it was the least nice place.

We did kind of the reverse of your plan a few weeks ago. Started in Kenmare, drove to Cahir, toured the castle, drove to Cashel, toured the Rock, then drove to Kilkenny to spend the night. It was not difficult at all. And it stays light late so you won't have to worry about that.

Survfan: I think that is a very good idea. You can see Kilkenny and it really isn't too long of a drive to Cashel. I've stayed in both places and liked them. On your way down to Cork, don't you go through Cahir? You could stop and see the Castle there. When you return from your wonderful trip, please let us hear from you. Best wishes, Joan

I ended up booking a second night in Cashel and I think I made a good move. I think to much of my trip was one night here and another there and I really wanted to condense that so I had more 2 night stays and even 3 in Cork but that is because my friend lives there. Also, does Cashel have any pubs or things to do at night? Is there a town with resturants or shops?

John, You'll find all your needs in Cashel. It is a small town. I was there for 3 nights and found plenty to do. Have a great trip and don't forget to get back to us when you return. Joan

Survfan: What you propose is very doable.
Cahir would offer more choices for food and lodging and isn't that far, eleven miles.
When you are at Killkenny, be sure to see the Rothe House on Parliament Street. It is a restored 1594 merchants house and is very interesting in architecture, furnishings and artifacts.
