cash vs. creditcard at Italian hotels
What is your experience getting a discount at hotels in Venice, Florence, Vernazza and Montepulciano when paying in cash vs. credit card? With the conversion rate, is it worth it?

Some hotels will discount for cash, about 5%, so you'd save that plus whatever conversion surcharge your creditcard would impose, minus the cost of getting the cash from an ATM. So, with ATM cash a savings of 5-6%, or no savings at all if you convert US dollars or travelers checks to Euro at the typical 8%.
Not all hotels that accept cards will discount for cash; you'll have to ask.

I stayed at a Rome hotel that offered a cash discount to our neighbours in the hotel. Since we had booked through an Internet booking agency they would not give us a cash discount so we used our credit card.

We pay for everything sizeable with credit cards - so there's no problem if a dispute arises. Have never asked about a cash discount - and frankly running around to gather all that cash would be too much trouble to bother. But we generally do 4* (vacation) or 5* (business) so that may be why no one offered.
