No it wasn't aimed at you...and I don't think the beginning was all that rude but the information was correct and that's all that really counts.

The point is there have been many threads regarding this on the message board as well as tons of articles. I just get a little tired, sorry if that seems rude, of answering the same questions week after week.

So if you feel the beginning was rude, just cross it out. The information was given not mean spiritedly but in terms of trying to be helpful. Sometimes, in being helpful, it is necessary to scream a little bit.

Hope you find the information helpful and in the end that's all that really counts.

Hey Budman,
If you have not been getting a 1% rebate on your USAA Plat MC, since 15 June, you're getting scr......
I used mine in Europa (offset the 1% MC currency conversion charges) and will in MX these next 6 weeks.
I use my Citi AA/MC in the US for the AA miles.

You want to know what rude is....

Idiots, this has been answered in several different threads on this board. Just do a search on credit cards, and don't be so lazy to keep asking the same stupid questions.

Now...that's rude and I would never do something like that. Some of the misinformation out there, even posted by others who think they know it all, drives me batty sometimes.

But there's a big difference. I don't think I know it all when I post...I only post when I know it all.

Sorry if that goes down the wrong way but if you read any post of mine, you will know and can be sure that the information it gives is 100% accurate which is more than what I see from what some others write...and their wrong answers can cost you plenty of money and/or aggrevation. At least I save you money which is my only intent.

xyz123,

Hey, I understand. I get frustrated like that sometimes too ... and end up putting my foot in my mouth when I really didn't mean too.

Yes, I even admitted before that your information was very good.

I guess you could have been more rude if you wanted too ... but I had a real emotion and I told you how I felt. I don't regret it ... but now I understand your point of view.

No hard feelings...ok?

mikemo -- I get it. Yes, I get it. I get it, I get it, I get it.

Isn't it wonderful???

Here's another good piece of info. My M/C statement cycles on the 13th of the month. I am going to Italy departing on the 16th thru the 27th. I get 35-45 days free credit on my M/C. In other words, I don't have to pay that bill until the 3rd of November and incur no interest since I will pay it all off.

xyz123 - you summed it up into one. Nice post.

For FromAtlanta:

Please know that you do NOT have the same rights of recovery with a "debit" or "check" card as with a credit card. You should read the agreement carefully for what to do if your card is stolen or used without your authorization.

You card, if stolen, even if just the number is stolen - well, the entire balance in your account could be quickly wiped out, without your PIN (by making purchases). You would not likely be able to resolve this quickly.

You should definitely insist that your bank issue an ATM only card. Then, if you plan to travel with your check-card you must safe guard it (and the number).

Some banks refuse to issue an ATM only card if you have a check/debit card. I say find another bank. In fact, I'd recommend finding another bank anyway - one with a debit or check card that assesses no "currency conversion" fee.

djkbooks,

I think I will go to another bank and open a checking account just for travel. Could you recommend a national bank to me?

The bank I used is Citizens which is based in Rhode Island with branches in many of the New England states. The issue MasterCard "Master Money Cards" which is a debit/ATM card. They will also issue a separate ATM-only card upon request. With direct deposit, checking accounts have no fees and online banking and bill paying are free.

Your best bet is probably to shop your local banks until you find one whose debit/check card does not have an extra "currency conversion" fee.

Note also that banks often have ATM withdrawal fees for "foreign transactions" - defined as any ATM not on the local bank's network (here in the US, not just abroad). Often the bank providing the ATM has their own fee they charge you. These fees can really add up. So, it's important to find out about those as well.

Take a look at USAA Bank in San Antonio, TX

1. Free chequing account

2. Automatically pay interest when balance exceeds a certain amount (albeit at a very low rate)

3. 10 free "foreign" (out of their network) ATM transactions/month when using either their ATM card or debit card (both of which are free)

4. Will rebate up to $15/month the obnoxeous almost illegal fees other banks charge for having the audacity to use their machines!

5. Postage paid envelopes for deposit.

So you can keep $1 in the account, just before travel mail in a cheque to cover your proposed expenses and use the ATM's in Europe for free (up to 10 times)....also works nicely for trips in USA as they rebate the other bank's fee.

Finally their MC/Visa credit cards (as opposed to debit cards) do not charge a cash advance fee. Yes interest runs from the moment you take the cash and it seems heavy (18% a year or whatever) but that only translate to 1.5% each month....so if you withdraw $500 and pay it back upon receipt of the next bill (remember this is for emergency use) it would only cost you $7.
