Cascais - pronunciation?
 

Can anyone help us with the correct pronunciation of Cascais?

I asked a cab driver there the same question. Kash(sounds like wash)--kie--ees(long e sound). There are a few people on the board here who live in Portugal or have family there that can correct me if this is wrong. I am curious too!

What did you think of the area? We are staying in a B&B (Casal Antigo) - do you happen to know anything about it?

We loved the area! I do not know anything about your B&B. In Cascais we stayed at a Best Western, the Cidadela, which was great. We had our children with us so we had a 3 bedroom suite, which had a kitchen in it as well. Friends were in the regular rooms. All were very nice.

Cascais was great in that you can walk everywhere and it is just a really laid back feel to it. Everyone was so friendly too. We did a carriage ride one afternoon, and the driver let our daughter sit up with him and "help". The downtown area is quite lively in the evening and nice for soaking up the ambiance. There was an outdoor market near the Boca that I found a few things, and then a beautiful linen store in the main part of downtown. It is just a beautiful little town and I can see why people who live there love it.

When speaking Portuguese, "s" can sound like a "j" sound, as in Zza-Zza (Zza-Zza Gabor). Hence, Cascais is pronounced Cajjj-KIjjjj. You will do well by pronouncing it as Kash-Ki-sssh. My ex-husband was born in Lisboa.

ThinGorjus, any recs for a hotel in Lisbon for our last night in Portugal? We are staying in a B and B in Cascais for the first week and a villa near Logos (Praia da Luz) for the second week. We will have a long drive to Lisbon on Saturday and we thought we would stay in Lisbon in a centrally located hotel for a last night dinner, evening walk, etc. We leave on Sunday morning to return home.

The only hotel I have ever stayed at in Lisboa is Hotel Mundial (Rua Dom Duarte) in Graca. It is just two blocks from Baixa and Praca Dom Pedro. You can easily walk to Chiado, Bairro Alto, and Alfama. A nice place to have a drink in Chiado is Cafe Brasileira. All the famous drag queens of Lisboa (not in drag) sit outside (in the last section going UP the hill--the "gay" section) and carry on like mad. It is very fun. You can watch from the sidelines or join in.

Hi agree with thingorjus that Kash-Ki-sssh is a good approach, but I'd like to remember that the stress is on the 2nd syllabe, and therefore I think that Kush-Ki-sssh is better (ki like ky in Kylie Minogue)
