Cascais or Albufeira in Portugal
We have a choice of one week in either Cascais or Albufeira in October. We prefer sightseeing to just lying on beaches. Can anyone recommend one over the other?

If you prefer sight seeing then I would choose Cascais. The sea will most probably be too cold to swim but if this is important you could look for a hotel with a heated pool. From Cascais you can easily visit Lisbon by train. There is a lot to see in Lisbon - wonderful museums, squares and old areas which are great for just wandering around. From Cascais, you can also visit Sintra, Fatima, Nazarre and Obidos. I really love Obidos and Nazarre. Obidos is a hill town - very beautiful and Nazarre is a fishing town. Hope this helps.

A car would be useful for Sintra and exploring the area around Obidos but you would be much better of taking the train from Cascais into Lisbon. It's only about half an hour (maybe less) and is safe, quick and convenient as well as cheap. Also, you get rid of the hassle of looking for somewhere to park in a busy city. Lisbon train station is central - no need for buses or taxis when you get there.
Hope this helps.

cascais is the place! Not that this matters much, but Bono, robert deNiro & Madonna all have homes there. So do a bunch more names, but I don't remember...It's close to Sintra, and a commuter train ride to Lisbon. Obidos is only less than an hour's drive above Sintra. Heck, it took us an hr. and a half to get from the airport into sintra in 9/03 when we spent 2 weeks in just the northern half of Portugal. By the way, the absolute best book we found was called "Best Places to Stay-Portugal", Globe-Pequot Press. We had 1st night and last night reservations for our trip, and the proprietress of the pensione in Sintra turned us on to this book. We just called ahead in the am for that night's stay. Other than Coimbra [& the 'Stones concert there!] we never were turned away... Great little country; intriguing to consider retirement there, even. We've had 3 trips there now; the Madeiras are next...
