So glad to read all the positive comments. Looking forward to seeing it.

I don't think there's actually much "real" Venice in Dangerous Beauty. A lot of those backgrounds are CGI, and I believe most of the film was filmed at Cinecitta and in locations in Lazio.
"Wings of the Dove" has better Venice scenery. Am dying to see Casanova sometime! |
Rent Al Pacino's version of The Merchant of Venice and Lawrence Fishburne's Othello.
|
I liked Dangerous Beauty not because of Venice, but because of the great shots of Rufus Sewell!!
Trivia Question: Besides being in movies set in Venice, what do Rufus Sewell and Heath Ledger have in common?? MY |
A Knight's Tale?
I went to see Casannova just for the scenery (I also was there in Oct. 04 and saw them filming some scenes). I just wanted to add that if anyone is thinking of not going because the movie is rated "R" (in America), well . . . I didn't see anything to warrant that rating. No nudity, swearing, violence, etc. Just implied sex, nothing explicit. |
Michelle, completely agree with you re: Rufus Sewell. Lucky Oliver Platt, he was in Dangerous Beauty and is in Casanova. All that time filming movies in Italy must be such a drag.
Also, don't forget Summertime for Venice movie viewing pleasure. |
Jolie -Thanks for the comments about the rating. I would like to be able to take my kids (age 10 and 13), since we were all in Venice last March, but wasn't going to because of the "R" rating. So perhaps it is okay for my 13 year old??

Terrible! Terrible! Terrible!
I was so disappointed. My husband and I are not the biggest movie critics, and I was ready to walk out. The only thing the kept me in the movie thearter that night was the view of Italy, and maybe the costumes. Not worth your time! |
Yes, Jolie!!
A Knight's Tale!! I haven't seen Rufus in anything lately. Wonder where he's been. MY |
I strongly disagree with e13745...Casanova was a light hearted enjoyable movie. It was humorous and a great escape...
|
Oh, yes, Wings of a Dove made me want to jump on a plane immediately and go to Venice..but then so did The Kindness of Strangers..omigod, what a good movie!
|
Sorry- the film was The Comfort of Strangers :)
|
I was also surprised at the "R" rating for "Casanova," though the fact that the implied sexual activity sometimes involved more than two people might have been the problem.
Anyway, would have been comfortable taking my 15-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter to see it, particularly as they'd have enjoyed the scenery. Nowhere near as objectionable as much of what's on network TV, much less the ads for many movies. |
Ahhh, Rufus Sewell. You can't hear me, but I'm wolf whistling right now. ;-)
|
I giggled all the way through Casanova. And the half-heard asides were great, kind of throw-away lines. The scenery was what I went for but I didn't expect to enjoy it so much. A kind of cross between The Merchant of Venice, Amadeus and Pirates of the Caribbean.
|
gertie,
That's exactly how I felt, you had to really listen, pay attention, because the lines were quick and sometimes quite subtle. |
AnneO and Macanimals! I was ALSO in Venice when they were filming. One of my best friends got married in Venice in October of 04. We saw the scaffolding up in St. Marks square and people in dress. Not much else. After the wedding, we took small 6 person motor boats (about 15 in total) down the grand canal in our black tie dress - I think some people on the Rialto bridge thought we might have been from the movie. Finally saw the movie this weekend ... thought it was great! Cute & funny & entertaining...but you really had to pay attention to catch everything!
I'm surprised it has an R rating...I wouldn't have a problem taking my 12-14 yo nieces, and I'm pretty strict about stuff like that. Anne |
My DH and I saw Casanova on the 9th--our WA. We were both totally delighted with it! The subtle quips, the scenery, costumes, not to mention the delightful cast! We had wanted something light-hearted with a happy ending. It fit the bill just right! Cheers for Casanova!!
