Casa Il Rosario in Rome - budget convent option

I obtained this information, which I have paraphrased, from a recent email from a sister at the convent. Maybe it will be useful for someone seeking a budget option. The previous reviews on this forum were good.

Casa per pellegrini e turisti
House of Welcome for Pilgrims and Tourists
ISTITUTO IL ROSARIO
Provincia Italiana
Delle Suore di Carità Domenicane
della Presentazione
Via Sant?Agata dei Goti, 10 - 00184 ROMA
Tel. 06.6792346 - Fax 06.69941106
e-mail: [email protected]

Single room without bath is 38Euro.
Single room with bath is 46Euro.
Double room with bath is 80Euro.
Prices include a continental breakfast.

From the directions, you get off at metro stop Cavour on line B. On the map it looks like it is several blocks southwest of Termini.

I probably won't go for this option unless someone can convince me this is a better location than the Hotel Julia (and I would be interested to hear how this location is generally). But the price is certainly right.

Here is another recent quote from an email:

Albergo Giusti
SUORE DI SANT'ANNA DELLA PROVVIDENZA
Via Giusti , 5
00185 Roma, Italia
Tel. 06 / 70.45.34.62
Fax: 06 / 70.49.03.88
E- mail: [email protected]

The price for a single room with ensuite bathroom and breakfast is 49 Euros. The curfew is 22:30.

I think the curfew is too early for me, but can anyone comment on this location? The Santa Susanna site says "midway between San Giovanni and Santa Maria Maggiore."

I stayed at this convent hotel for 5 nights during Holy Week this past April. It's located on a small hilly street about a 5 minute walk to the Coloseum or P.Venezia. My room was rather large, small modern bathroom with plenty of closet space. The breakfast was actually a buffet of juices, rolls, cereals, yogurts. They also had a separate coffee machine with multiple choices ect.. Only a few nuns spoke English. My stay was very pleasant as I would stay there again. I also stayed at Fraterna Domus which has a great location near the P. Navona. The breakfast and amenities were better at Casa Il Rosario, but you couldn't beat the location of Fraterna Domus. Have a Great Trip!!! Mike

More convent info:

This is from the Book Bed and Blessings: Italy by June Walsh

Istituto Sant Giulianna Falconieri
Via Calasanzio, 1
Rome 00186
Phone (06) 688 03344
Fax (06) 687 1471

For more than 500 years, this palazzo and those adjacent to it were owned by a prestigious Roman family. In 1920, the sisters took possession and,
in recent years, have opened the house to visitors. There are large, grand
public rooms filled with antiques and sprinkled with plants. The upstairs
rooms are clean and simple, with modern bathrooms on the floors. Close to the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori, antique shops and restaurants, the location is terrific."

Rooms: Singles, doubles, triples; most with private baths located outside (adjacent to) rooms; telephones in rooms.
Meals: Breakfast included
Price: 45 Euro Single, 75 Euro double
Credit Cards: Not accepted
Language(s) Spoken: English
Facilities: Elevator, TV room, chapel
Season: Open all year except August

Here's info I found on the Rick Steves site (www.ricksteves.com)
"We have been extremely pleased with this convent in Rome. Instituto Santa
Giullianna Falconieri. VERY central accomodation (2 blocks from the
Pantheon), big rooms, clean as a whistle. We just returned from there--3
nights with breakfast was 195 euros. The sisters are extremely cheerful and can answer lots of questions for you (and no, you don't have to go to mass) The doors close at 12:00 midnight--you have to be buzzed in with an electric door so you feel safe leaving your stuff in your room. This is our second stay and we can't recommend it enough." (9-03)

I'll be staying here in late April, 2005. Being able to book by telephone with Sr. Kathyrn (from Chicago!) was a plus. Will report in upon return.

I'm staying at Il Rosario next week and have promised to meet a friend - what piazza/café/church/monument would be closest and simplest?
Thanks.

There's a wine bar called Cavour 313 that is located, logically enough, at Via Cavour 313. It generally receives good reviews. According to my information, it's open in June 12.30-2.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.-12.30 a.m., Monday through Saturday.

Via Cavour is the next main cross street if you go up Via Santa Agata dei Goti from Il Rosario.

According to www.atac.roma.it, it's 200 metres between the two places.

But you can also meet at the entrance to the Foro Romano on Via dei Fori Imperiali or near the Colosseum. Both will be further away.

Reporting in as promised above in Sept. 2004. Our group stayed at Istituto Sant Giulianna Falconieri in late April 2005. It's a wonderful sanctuary in the middle of busy Rome. The sisters are fabulously hospitable and genuinely made us feel well cared for. The rooms are basic, as would be expected in a convent, but they're very clean. Breakfast, presided over by the good-natured Sr. Kathryn (originally from Chicago), is a little buffet of croissants (called brioche in Italy), bread with assorted jams, and good coffee. The only drawback might be that, while the location is great, there is a lot of traffic noise throughout the night, which could be a problem for light sleepers in warm weather with the windows open.

Thanks, Betsy! How did it work with the four (not en-suite) bathrooms for 10 bedrooms?

Eloise, there are several bathrooms (showers only) on each floor and a sink and bidet in each bedroom. Most of the bathrooms have been remodeled. I never had to wait, and all were clean. By the way, there seem to be no rooms with double beds, rather there were narrow, but comfy, twins in most rooms and three twins in other rooms.

Thank you for the information, Betsy! I daresay the sink in the room would allow me to pull myself into some kind of shape before I confront the world. And I would not need or want a double bed, since I almost always travel alone.

Hey all

Anyone have an email address for Instituto Sant Giulianna Falconieri? All I can find is a fax # and I'd much rather email them directly. Many thanks!

Hi Tamara, email is [email protected]. I recently used it to book a room for my last night in Rome. I am so excited after reading the above comments about this convent and Sister Kathryn seems very kind and helpful. Jen

Sister Kathryn is a total stitch, with an impish gleam in her eye. That being said, she is one of the warmest, most welcoming individuals I've ever met. I showed her Fodor's Travel Talk (their ancient dial-up connection was s-l-o-w) when I stayed at the convent in April, so I hope she's reading this.

I too just returned from Istituto Sant Giulianna where I stayed this past September (2005). The accommodations are very comfortable, I felt very safe, and the location is wonderful. (It was a pleasant walk from the convent to the Vatican, and a very easy walk to the Pantheon). Sister Kathryn was so helpful and resourceful during our stay and couldn't have kept me more on my toes. She certainly has a lot of spunk and I hope she never changes! Thanks!

Just wanted to add a couple of things about Istituto Santa Giuliana Falconieri, as I just returned from a stay there. They DO accept credit cards. All room do NOT have a sink and bidet (my single room did not).

Thought I'd clarify those two points in case they're important to someone.

Since we're on convent lodgings, my husband and I have made reservations to stay in convents in Rome (@ CASA PER FERRIE SANTA MARIA ALLE FORNACI), and in Florence (@ ISTITUTO SUORE DI SANT'ELIZABETTA). In Venice, we also made have reservations at HOTEL BELLEARTI (which was a former convent, I was told). Any comments, experiences (god and bad) you can share will be greatly appreciated.
