Carry-on baggage banned by Pan Am

If Pan Am is a tiny airline, that makes sense. I recently flew( this past summer) one of the tiny commuter planes from San Juan to Vieques (a beautiful island, inspite of the controversy). The plane only had 8 - 12 seats and ALL carry-ons were put in the back of the plane - there was no room.

I don't forsee any of the major airlines with jet services doing this. I will be happy to have my briefcase or back pack searched, but I too rely on carrying reading books and a change of clothes in the carry on in case my suitcase is lost (that has happened several times). For business trips, I must bring lap top and briefcase because I work on the plane.

Any major carrier who forbids carry-ons will not get my business.

Unless you're traveling with a child, or you have some special medical needs, there's no reason at all to have a carry -on larger than a plastic grocery bag. All I need is a book, my passport, tickets and some tissues. All of this I can carry in my hands. In the plastic bag, I carry a bottle of water, and some food. My wife will put in an extra item or two if it is that time of the month. Otherwise, that all we take on between the two of us. And we travel to Europe from the U.S. about once every two months.
