Carry on baggage

What is the maximum allowed to carry on the plan? I've travelled with a small carry on (21 inch) suitcase and a daypack but have heard that only one piece of luggage is allowed now. Thanks. We're travelling Al Italia.

I would read on the airline's own website or call on the telephone and ask. Also rules may be different going over, than coming back.

When are you travelling & do you connect via any the airports - The UK rules for hand luggage (see www.baa.com) are soon to become the EU wide rules for hand luggage

ADditional info: We're flying Tpa to Atlanta and to Venice. We travel lightly but would like to have at least a small daypack in addition to the small suitcase.
The Al Italia website indicates briefcase and/or computer bag in addition to small suitcase. Would a daypack be the same?

You can take two items in to Europe - but on your return journey you will be limited to 1 item.

But this rule is just for passing through security. If your carry on isn't crammed full you should be able to squish the day pack inside it. After you are airside you can remove it and carry the two pieces on the plane.

I've recently done some research on the subject.

The carry-on limit for USA departures is a bag no larger than 22" x 14" x 9" plus a briefcase or purse, plus a coat and umbrella, plus equipment for disabled and infants, space permitting.

The limit for all EU departures starting April 17 is one bag with maximum dimensions of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm. This is 22" x 18" x 10". These dimensions are from several secondary sources. I couldn't track down an official EU directive on the subject. The 10" dimension is suspicious since 9" is the size of the overhead opening on most of the planes I've been on in the last 10 years. My softside is 9" thick and barely fits.

Per janisj you can take things out of your one bag after the security check point.

Re the size limits mentioned by hopscotch.

In both cases they represent the maximum sizes that can be taken through security checks.

The airline maximum size may be smaller than that so check your airline.

Good point alanRow.

Just called our airline - and they only allow one carry-on bag per passenger - no additional personal item (ex: pocket book). So I would say definitely call your airline and find out what their rules are. Also, the max. weight was 22 lbs.

Sorry, but I just have a vision of a film with Barbara Windsor in a bustle, being leered at by Sid James.

Britons usually talk about luggage.

The weight restriction, if there is one, definitely may vary from carrier to carrier as does the size of overhead bin openings which most defintely varies from aircraft to aircraft type.

Thanks to all. I called Al Italia and the restruction is only one carryone - wow. That will be tough to pack for a two week European journey.
Ira, I always appreciate your postings and suggestions but was "ttt" in your response?

I'm not ira, but ttt means To The Top. Ira posted ttt to bring you thread to the top of the list/front of the line . . .
