Carcassonne with 3 Kids
We're taking three kids (7, 7 and 2) to Languedoc in late July and I need help... They're pretty active, well-behaved kids who love to eat. No chicken nuggets and hamburgers for my horde. It's not that I won't serve them - I love a good nugget -- it's just that they prefer things like sushi, capers, calamari and steak. (Not together, thankfully.
We would love your advice on great activities and yummy restaurants within 90 minutes of Carcassonne that will tolerate kids. (We're staying 3 nights at the Hotel de la Cite before heading to Barcelona for a week.)
Biking on the Canal du Midi? Playing in a lake? Roman ruins? Museums that will enchant kids? Amazing parks? They'll tolerate the more grown-up activities - shopping, art museums, etc. -- as long as they get their wiggles out earlier in the day with an active pursuit.
Just to give you an idea of what they're into... All of my kids loved the Imperial War and Natural History Museums in London, Princess Diana's Garden in Kens, the beaches here in northern California, running around plazas in Spain, tapas at all hours, etc. And, before their little brother came along, the 7s -- both girls -- loved visiting the trenches in northern France, the Vimy Ridge memorial, and counting the fruit bats in Sydney.
Many thanks!
Kate

Let me rephrase my question, then. We would love advice -- from people who have actually travelled to this region with their children -- on great activities and yummy restaurants within 90 minutes of Carcassonne.

Kate can you post after your trip to let us know what you found? I am taking my kids in September.
Not sure if your kids are old enough but there seems to be a craze in France for those adventure parks with ropes courses. Apparently there's one near Carcassone. There's also apparently an Australian nature park (which we won't be visiting unless we get really really homesick!)

Our family enjoyed Foix castle, about 1 1/2 hours from Carcassonne. Lots of interesting towers to explore. One of their all time favourite sites in southern France is Pont du Gard. It has a great playground and lots of river banks to explore, as well as being one of the greatest Roman ruins anywhere. It is quite fantastic. However, it is about 2 hours from your base.
