Caracalla spa questions
 

Hi,

My family will be spending a day in Baden Baden in the middle of May. We want to visit the Caracalla Spa while we are there.

My research indicates that once you pay the entrance fee that you are able to make use of all the facilities as you will. Meaning that one could go from pool to pool or sauna to sauna without needing to pay again for any service.

Is this correct?
Is the gym area included in the price as well?
Would my family need a reservation?
How crowded do you think it will be in mid May?

yes, it is correct, You could use all facilities in the Caracala - excluding the Arena Vita, means the gym area.

You can't make a reservation. About crows - depends on the day, weekends are crowded for sure. If You go there, go as early as possible.

You don't pay extra fees (beyond admission) for use of the various pools. However, you would have to pay extra if you wanted a back massage, etc.
Re crowds, our own experience was that Sundays were the worst. The last time we were in Baden-Baden on a Sunday, there was a huge line and a minimum of 30 minutes wait to get in, which meant all the pools were quite crowded. So try to schedule your trip on a weekday.
FYI, the Cafe Beeg near Caracalla is an excellent cafe if you want to sample Baden-Baden's delicious pastries.
If you are planning to go to town by train, you are aware that the train station is Baden Oos, not Baden-Baden itself. From Baden Oos, you can either take a 10 minue bus ride or catch a cab, both very easy.
We will be back in Baden-Baden in mid May ourselves, perhaps we will run into you (my husband has family in Baden Oos). If you see a couple in their 40s acompanied by an older gentleman and a rather plump black and white English cocker spaniel, that will be us.

You know that the cocker will have to wear a bathing cap in the spa ...;-)

We are planning a trip in 2006 and are interested in the spas at Baden Baden. Does anyone have a preference regarding the original Roman spa vs Caracalla? Do both have saunas and are they dry or wet saunas?

The Roman Irish spa is beautiful in a classic way. It's also mostly a coed nude spa. If you're not comfortable with that, stick to Caracalla or one of the hotel spas (fyi, at Caracalla, men don't have to wear Speedos, they can wear regular U.S. style bathing trunks). We like the spa facilities at the Dorint/Sofitel next to the casino. Nice to just throw a bathrobe over your bathing suit and take the elevator down to the spa, then go back to your room when you're finished without leaving the hotel.
