Car travel in Switzerland

We are going to be traveling around Switzerland the first week of June by automobile. I read somewhere about a pass that is needed for the highways in Switzerland. Can anyone give me more information on this i.e. how much it costs, where to get it. Thank You

Chances are there'll already be a sticker (vignette) on your car...

This is good to know. We're renting in Geneva, so I'll confirm in advance from Hertz.

If the vignette is not on the car, any service station will sell you one.

All Swiss-registered rental cars will have the current vignette on the windshield. But if you are picking up your car on the French side of Geneva Airport (which makes sense as rental cost is usually lower), you will get French-registered car and it may not come with current sticker. You will then have to buy one for 40 SFr. Don't be tempted to drive on any highways (indicated by the sign 'vignette obligatoire/vignettenpflichtig') without your sticker - the police and Autobahn authorities are on the lookout and if caught, you will be fined 200 SFr plus the cost of a new sticker. 2010 sticker is orange in colour with numbers in violet.

Thank you all for the info. I will be picking the car up in Italy so don't know if there will be a sticker on the car, but I will definitely get one when I enter Switzerland.
