driving from Madrid to Segovia and avoiding the Guadarrama tunnel
Does anyone know how long (in time/distance) the Guadarrama tunnel on the A6 between Madrid and Segovia is and are traffic jams likely? I have a tunnel phobia and wish to avoid it unless it is short. Which is the alternate route that avoids the tunnel--is it the N VI? And when do we get off the A6 to take the alternate route? We will be driving from Toledo to Segovia and then from Segovia to the airport. Thank you so much!

I thought the tunnel was used for trains.

This tunnel is about 2.9 km long. To avoid it, you might want to try the N-VI (parallel to the freeway - just exit a little before the tunnel)which climbs the range with hairpin turns (with a lookout at the top of the range) and goes down on the other side where you can re-link to the autopista.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the exit to take when heading north is at the M-614 road which leads right into the town of Guadarrama where it intersects the N-VI. As I recall, this exit is well marked.

Weber-flashback moment-I once took the bus from Madrid to La Granja up/down the mountains and it was the scariest ride of my life!No barriers to mark the edge of the road-I was shaking when we arrived in La Granja!I now take the bus to Segivia and then another bus to La granja to avoid that dreadful/dangerous road.

Chapla: I can understand. I was probably so tired from the overnite flight I didn't notice. The scariest mountain drive I have had in Spain was just south of Granada from Lanjaron up to Capiliera. Just as you described. I can imagine it would even more scary as the passenger rather the driver where one blithely thinks oneself to be control.
