Car travel between Venice, Slovenia and Croatia
 

We are planning on renting a car in Venice then driving to Croatia (Rovinj) then back to Slovenia for a week. I've read others say that you can't take a car rented in Italy to Croatia, is that still true? I've also read about some sort of car fee / permit required as you enter Slovenia. Can anyone provide any information on this?

I posted earlier about not being allowed to bring a car into Croatia from Italy. It happened to us 3 yrs. ago. the best bet would be to call autoeurope and/or other car rental agencies to see what their policy is currently. We drove from Ljubljana to Rovenj. it was only a few hours. we also returned to Ljubljana.

So what did you think about Rovinj? Did you drive down to Pula and see the ruins? If so was it worth the trip? What were the roads like between LJU and Rovinj? We will only be on Istria for a couple of days then we are spending a week or so in Slovenia. Did you go up to the mountains at all? It looks beautiful!

I agree, call Autoeurope and ask current policy. We checked about 4 years ago and ended up renting in Koper and training to and from Trieste.

Rovinj is one of the best looking port cities I've seen anywhere. Fantasies of retiring there. There's fresh seafood, good Italian food. Nice people who told me that they like Americans, some follow basketball closely because of Croatian players. We went to Porec, which is also a very nice town. Both towns have signs in Croatian and Italian and the atmosphere is very Italian. Rovinj and Poruc was ruled by Venice for many years and it shows in its buildings.
The road was very good. We drove from LJU to the Slovenian coast . We had visited Piran in slovenia before, so we drove straight throught to Poruc. If memory serves me correctly it took about 3 hrs. The border crossing was simple and we stayed in Istria almost 2 wks. except for our foray to Trogir which we found crowded so we drove back. We stayed at a hotel with half board, which was interesting as we were able to sample both Italian and Croatian food.
