Car service to Vienna Airport
 

Has anyone used a reliable car service in Vienna? Are taxi's reliable and regulated in Vienna? I need to catch a flight on a Thursday morning and wonder what would be best?

We took a cab from central Vienna on a weekday morning and it was fine... there were plenty waiting outside our hotel and the concierge nabbed one for us. I may be mistaken (my memory's a bit faulty on this) but I think we may have paid a flat rate. I believe we'd planned to take a shuttle, or perhaps the train, but the hotel people told us a taxi was just about as cheap and they settled on a price with the driver right then and there. The airport isn't that far out of the city.

Cabs are regulated and perfectly relaible. But your hotel may have a car service contact that is less expesive - ours always have.

Your hotel can reserve a luxury car service to the airport for about 40 euro one way. If you take a taxi, you may end up with a Benz or a lousy car with a less professional driver for the same price. Taxis have a steep airport surcharge which makes the cost equal to the limo service.

How much tip should one give for the long taxi ride?

Most all taxi drivers expect a small tip up to 5% of the fare. A few give 10% but this is not usual.

Coming from the US we tend to overtip and feel really bad to give less especially when the fare is low.

How about in upscale restaurants with good service? In the US it's usually between 18-20%, but I've heard that 10% is enough in Germany/Austria.

10% is good at a better restaurant - many here will leave much less especially at a typical middle priced place.

As you probably have seen from visits - a bill will not normally be presented until the dner asks for it in most any place.
Normally you advise the server the total amount you wish to pay - bill cost + any amount of tip.

Example - 50 euro bill you wish a 5 euro type - simply advise server 55 euro - he / she will understand this - a typical practice- and make change for the 55 euro total including the bill and tip. The tip not normally left on the table as you leave
