Car Service from Naples to Ravello
 

Hello --

After reading the many posts about driving between these two destinations, we've decided to hire a car to get us from Naples to Ravello. Any recommendations for such a service with an English-speaking guide? One, perhaps that we could also use on a day trip to Pompeii? Thanks in advance.

I'd highly recommend the Gargiulos- Giovanni (dad) and Giancarlo (son) who can be reached at tourofitaly.com. They are extremely reliable, lots of fun, and speak English very well. We've used them several times- twice for trips to Pompeii.

Where are you starting on your way to Naples?

It might be easier to get to Ravello via Salerno.

As Ira suggests, if you're coming from Rome or north of Rome by train, you're better off staying on the train until Salerno, which is another 40 minutes south of Naples.

It's also important to know in advance that a private guide/driver is not allowed (by law) to act as a guide inside of Pompeii, although many of them can arrange for an official Pompeii guide, if requested, at the entrance.

Salerno is much closer to Ravello, but if you arrive in Naples and hire a driver, you then can experience the drive along the Amalfi Coast past Positano, etc. on the way from Naples. Your choice, of course.

There are several threads listing Amalfi Coast drivers and guides on this forum, which you can probably find easily by searching using something like "private drivers; Amalfi Coast". There is also an well-experienced driver who seems to be starting his own business this year, who has offered some helpful suggestions on this forum, once he learned that he could not advertise directly. You might consider giving him a chance-It's an starting business, but he speaks very good english, judging from his posts. I think he will have a website soon, but his email is [email protected]

I have ridden with the Gargiulos, and agree that they are great also.
Both Francesco Marrapese and the Gargiulos are from the Sorrento area

Hi -- thanks for info so far. To reply to questions posed, the plan (so far) is to fly from States to Rome then onto Naples, get from Naples to Ravello and stay at Palazzo Sasso for 4 nights. From there, back to Rome via train from Naples for another 4 nights. Alas, we must then depart.

Possibly, I should skip the Rome-Naples portion on the air and do a train from Rome to Salerno? And returning to Rome (from Ravello), that might be best as well? Again, thanks for all the help.

For those who've done it, can you give me a rough idea how much it costs to get a driver & car from Naples airport to the Positano area ?

If you go to www.mappy.com or www.viamichelin.com you will see that Ravello is at the far eastern end of the AC from Naples.

You will have to decide if it is better for you to fly into Naples and hire a driver to Ravello or fly into Rome and train to Salerno and then on to Amalfi by ferry, bus or driver.

Ravello is in the hills above Amalfi.

dpara: If you're interested, here's how you can save a bunch of money. Follow these instructions up to Salerno, then take the identical ferry boat which goes to Positano, but get off at Amalfi. From Amalfi to Ravello, there is taxi (50 Euros) and bus (1 Euro) service.

The trip to Ravello from Naples by car is suprisingly short at around 45 minutes as you avoid the coast roadand all the winding roads by coming in from Angri of the A3 so it is an easy if costly journey.

Depending on the time of day,it can be quicker to get to Ravello from Naples than Salerno if not slightly more expensive.The Naples Ravello route via Angri avoids the coast roads.
