Car Rentals in the Azore Islands
 

Hi All-
We have US drivers licenses and will be renting cars in Sao Miguel and Terceira. We have read that international driving licenses are not necessary in Portugal. Can anyone confirm?

I suggest it would be courteous to provide information to traffic cops in a standard way so if they cannot read English they do not have to struggle to work it out. I've always found it pays to be nice to cops.

According to the US Embassy web site as well as the AutoEurope web site, International Drivers Permits are not necessary to drive a vehicle in Portugal. That being said, for $20 they are worth it and provide an extra layer of security for you.
