Car rentals

We're renting a car for 12 days and I haven't been able to find a dirt cheap but reliable rental. It's costing over 1k for the time needed and that's just not possible.

Any help?

Sher Jul 15th, 2009 07:03 PM

I think it would be helpful if you would be more specific.
When are you renting the car?
Where are you renting the car? Airport or city.
What size do you need?

What kind of transmission. Manual or automatic.
Is it one way?
Are you planning to factor in the CDW or Super CDw or does your credit card cover you.

What companies have you tried when you say reliable? If you haven't heard of them maybe others have.

Good Luck.

Hi; I agree with Sher that we could use more information. But you could try this site. www.carrentals.com/ Dick

You could try either europcar or auto europe. Both have given me decent rates for cars, even with one-way international drop-off rates included.

Try www.kemwel.com and don't pick up at an airport location. It's cheaper to take a cab/bus/train to an off-airport location for car pick-up.

We rented through Auto Europe. It was a car from Sixt. We picked it up from the Hilton in Dubrovnik, which meant we didn't need it until we were leaving town, plus we didn't have to traipse back to the airport. We dropped it off at the Zagreb airport and there wasn't a drop charge. As I recall the rates were reasonable, no where near 1K and we had the car for at least a week.

We are renting through Kemwel (which means we get our car from Europcar) --- picking up the car in Madrid (not at the airport) the first week in August, and returning it to the airport in Vigo. We will have the car ten days, and the total cost is $506.

I read some really frightening reviews, actually nightmares about Auto Europe and was frightened off. Last thing we need is a road side issue in a country we're unfamiliar with.

I just got off with Dollar and they don't have pick up in Pula, but at Ryjeka. Does anyone know how far Ryjecka is from the port? For only four days and drop off fee (dropping off in Zadar) I have been charged $424.85. Does this sound like the going rates? I went back and secured reservation with Auto Europe bc they're the only outfit I could pick up in Pula from.

I hope I'll be ok with them and moreso the fact that I've requested an automatic.

Thanks everyone!

I found cheapest rates from Avis and Sixt for Croatia and Slovenia for my upcoming September travel. The only issue with Avis was that they will not let me decline CDW while Sixt will allow me.

Good luck!

BTW, I am not renting a GPS or a car seat from the car rental company. I am carrying both of them from here.

What's CDW?

hmv1119 Jul 17th, 2009 09:53 AM

Does anyone know how I can get from Zadar to Split?

Mimar Jul 17th, 2009 10:24 AM

We're renting from www.economycarrentals.com and dropping off in Pula. But it's a manual.

To answer your last question, take a bus from Zadar to Split. Here's a link: http://www.ak-split.hr/EN/vozni.red/...dDolazaka.aspx

CDW = Collision Damage Waiver. ALso called, Loss Damage Waiver (LDW).

See this nice article by Rick Steves about CDW in Europe: http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/tips/carrental_cdw.htm

AHA! I see, well the best bargain I got was from Auto Europe. NOT surprisingly when I asked for an auto instead of manual from Avis the rate went up by $100. Wish me like with AE!

Does anyone know how far the drive would be from Plitivice Lakes to Split?

joannyc Jul 18th, 2009 03:41 PM

Seems to be 4-5 hours driving from Split to Plitvice so I imagine the same in the other direction...

lanejohann Jul 20th, 2009 06:26 PM

we drove from plitvice lakes starting at 12 30 and arrived in trogir which is near split at 6 30 or so
we had lunch in zadar for a couple of hours or so
it is easy driving

sometimes tricky to get out of places like zadar because of the little backstreets but if you have a navigational device itd be fine
people speak english too

lanejohann Jul 20th, 2009 06:27 PM

sixt was the best deal at the time

I'm surprised you've heard such horror stories about Autoeurope. A lot of folks on Fodors, including myself, have had very good experiences with them. They are, you know, brokers who arrange rentals with companies like Avis, Europcar, National and others. If one has problems with a rental, Autoeurope will help sort it out with the agency. As for rental rates, try www.kayak.com to get some competitive rates.
