Car rental rate - too good to be true?

We are leaving for Ireland on March 31. Have applied for and gotten a world master card and have in our possession the letter from 1 800 mc assist that is what I understand we will need to waive CDW

I have rented a car through carrentals.com which I have used before for domestic rentals with no problems. I have received a rate from them for Hertz Copied pertinent section below. Is this too good to be true? What am I missing?

Rate Information:
Form of Payment: MC
Currency: EURO CURRENCY
Rate Is: GUARANTEED
Rate Code: AEX2MC
Base Amount:
WEEKLY: 1 at 57.93 UNLIMITED FREE KM
EXTRA DAY: 6 at 8.28 UNLIMITED FREE KM

APPROXIMATE RENTAL CHARGE: 148.14 EUR UNLIMITED FREE KM

For rate inquiries, including information regarding
applicable taxes and fees, contact Hertz.

Approximate rental charges are based on available
information at the time of reservation. Additional fees or
surcharges may be applied at time of rental.

Inclusions (items that are included in Approximate Rental Charge):
TAX: 13.50 %
LOCATION SERVICE CHARGE: 22.91 EUR

Exclusions (items that are excluded from Approximate Rental Charge):
PER WEEK
COLLISION DAMAGE WAIVER: 101.50 EUR
SUPER CDW: 70.00 EUR
PERSONAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE /PERSONAL EFFECTS COVERAGE: 38.50 EUR
THEFT PROTECTION: 42.00 EUR
PER DAY
COLLISION DAMAGE WAIVER: 14.50 EUR
SUPER CDW: 10.00 EUR

I have read and reread various posts on car rentals in Ireland. Would appreciate any expert advice

Pam

hi Pam,

my main comment is that you're paying too much.

if you pay for two weeks, and return a day early, you'd save a packet.

regards, ann

Double check that your credit card will cover the CDW with no deduction. Ireland, Italy and Israel are generally excluded from CDW credit card coverage.

Annhig - I thought that would be a terrific rate - as I interpret it total cost would be 148.14 euro plus I think 28 euro picking up at airport. I have read other posts where people paid in excess of $400 for car rentals for similar periods

Michael - Did check and understand that world master cards will cover cdw

any other comments please?

hi buckeye

What I wrote was slightly tongue in cheek, I confess. it is a great rate, and I don't see how you can lose.

let us know how you get on.

In order to judge if the rate is good or bad we would have to know the type of car and is it a manual or automatic transmission?

Check whether your CDW coverage through World MC includes theft protection, and whether it's also has nil deductible.
If it's not included, you have to take Hertz theft protection at 42 euro/week, and possibly excess waiver, or you become liable for the full cost of a car in case of theft or attempted theft.

I linked to Hertz off the Aer Lingus website and I was quoted a price of $156.92 U.S. for a manual transmission economy car. At todays conversion rate 148 Euro is around $201.U.S. That quote was for a V.W. fox. If you are talking about a Ford Focus which Hertz calls a compact the price was $240.00 U.S. I think you misread your quote, it appears to me that the location service charge was included in your price of 148 Euro. Keep in mind there is going to be a conversion fee of around 3 percent added on by your credit card company. Have fun

There is not necessarily a 3% conversion fee. It depends on the company.

One more thing to consider. Some companies will put a hold of several thousand dollars on your credit card when you decline their insurance. I don't know if Hertz does this but you should check if it is going to be a problem. I believe that Mastercard tacks on a conversion fee for foreign transactions, but again you should check.

Agree with Johnod about the hold. It (along with stories of difficulties in settling claims) was the major reason we decided to buy the insurance (even though we had a World MC).

However, Johnod, again the conversion fee varies from MC to MC. We used our Capitol One MC for that very reason three years ago. And I've recently used it to pay for several things for our upcoming trip (Aer Lingus tickets within Europe, GB Heritage Pass, etc.), as nearly as I can tell from our online statement, we weren't charged any conversion fees.

I will use my capital one mc as much as possible - the problem is the car is in my friends name as he will be driving and he has a world mastercard from other issuer.

This whole car situation makes me nervous. I did reread what we got from mc assist and it does cover theft. However the terminology that is making me uneasy is that it says "MasterRental will pay for covered damages on a secondary basis for which you are, or any other authorized driver is, legally responsible to the rental agency." Not sure what secondary means in this case. But I know this is the same letter others have used so hopefully all is OK.

At the same website I mention earlier the cost of booking the same car with the inclusive insurance is less that $6.00 a day. If you are going to sit around Ireland for almost two weeks and let $76.00 split two ways worry you that much then please get the insurance and relax. Ireland is a great place to vist and have a good time. When the first pint is poured, park the car and relax and enjoy the craic. Have fun

Me again - talk about confusion. I think I am understanding now that cdw covers only the cost of the vehicle we are driving. How would other damages be covered (either another car we hit or people injured)? I did just check out link from Aer Lingus - that looks amazingly good - I am guessing that would be everything?

I know I am a pain

All rentals in Europe include liability insurance covering the other vehicle. The issue is only whether or not your vehicle is covered--that's the CDW.

Check out Conn Scannlain's Hertz rentals, at (800)828-0826. I got an even better rate through him.

Do follow up on Johnod's point about the hold on your credit card if you don't take the CDW. I was comparing Hertz and Dooley's -- Hertz was going to put a E 2000 (yes, two thousand) hold on my credit card
