Just back from Ireland.....very satisfied with Hertz as they tell you the final cost up front. Avis just tells you this and that and you figure it yourself, Dan Dooley same story, and they also charge you for the first tank of gas (therefore making money on anything left at the end)>)... Ireland IS indeed one of the three or four countries in the world that are picky about Collision Damage Wavier insurance, but Master Card covers this and it is a good idea to get a letter from Master CArd to take with you. (Visa won't cover it) Yes,the rate you were quoted is WAY TOO high. My husband has no problem with the manual left handed shift. but others feel uncomfortable. Also , we rented a mid sized , one size larger than the Ford Focus..it was a Ford Mondeo and a great car. (we were misled because Auto Europe calls their mid size a Focus!...) So again..we were very happy with HERTZ! We rented in Shannon, turned in at Dublin airport...no drop off fee. Ten days was under $300. Have a good trip. (prices probably do go up in the Summer, and of course the automatic adds on quite a bit)

I have never figured out where the great deals come with Dan Dooley. I'm sure there is some secret source, but I just checked the website and they quoted the cheapest price at about $780 (auto trans)for 16 days and mine is about $450 for the same length of time. Where did you get your Dan Dooley quote? I'd love to know. My price includes all taxes and CDW and TP. I'm trying to find a way to use my mastercard for the insurance, but MC only covers up to 15 days. I'm trying to see if I can rent the car twice on two different cards and get away with it. Anyone ever had any experience with this?

Bill, it's actually funny. I got the quote through their website, and it was higher than the email reply that I received from Dan Dooley by over $150 dollars. The gal was really nice, so when I replied to her email SPELLING OUT the dollar amount on the quote to make sure it wasn't a typo, she assured me that it was correct. Looks like there shouldn't be any surprises, but I will report back when I return in October. She was extremely helpful and seemed like a "real person." (She warned me not to count on a CD player...then told me the one time she brought a suitcase full of tapes, she got a CD player)

Maybe it's the time frame when I'm going? October rentals are probably cheaper than summer rentals. I did just go to the site to see if renting from different airports charge higher prices(I heard renting out of Dublin is a lot higher than Shannon) but I didn't see any difference on my days. I did notice however, when I was messing around with the quotes, that I accidently hit April instead of October. The rental was $200 cheaper in April. I think it's totally arbitrary...I still don't understand how the email reply from a real person was $150 less for the 10 days than my original quote from the website. Maybe my inquiry screamed "She's a nice girl, give her a break" to the rental office.

I'm not messing with the mastercard thing. I hear Diner's club covers CDW in Ireland too, but I'm not going to bother even though I have a Diner's Club card (don't ask me why I do...it's useless). I would rather pay the CDW and the extended CDW and the supersized-deluxe-ultrachic CDW and not have to worry about the car. I know I am going to do some damage. Warn your loved ones to stay away from southwest Ireland October 1-11, 2002.

I should clarify, because I don't think I made sense. I checked through Dan Dooley's website for the quote. Then I hit the "enquire" button and filled in my contact info. The US sales office sent me an email regarding my online inquiry, and that email quoted a price which was less than the online quote. I have not given them any credit card information to reserve, but as I mentioned, I must pay a month in advance.

Argh..hit post by accident...

So I think the tip might be to hit "enquire" instead of the "reserve" button? With the reserve button, you have the fill in your credit card info...so maybe they're less inclined to give you a break, since your intent is to reserve the car at the given price. Just a wild guess.

OK, no more from me today.
