Car rental prices in Norway - OUCH!!
 

Looked up renting a car for pick up in Bodo and drop off in Narvik for 3, yes, 3 days only. Price: $775 U.S.!! The drop off fee is ridiculous. Our plans were to take Hurtigruten to Bodo, car travel in Lofoten Islands and return the car to Narvik to get the overnight train to Stockholm.

But at this price, I can't see it happening. Any suggestions?

Have a look at VisitNorway.com. They have a lowest price guarantee for car hire, but I fear, like most things in Norway, car hire is expensive.

Through that site Europcar has a standard car (VW Passat) for $201 a day. Smaller cars are cheaper of course.

Just wait until you try to buy an "inexpensive" meal . . .

I know we did not pay that much back in 2009, but it was from a major town (Bergen) to a major town (Trondheim). Kemwel was on the face of it cheaper than AutoEurope, but Kemwel's agency would charge a one way fee that would have made the total of that rental more expensive.

At $200/day that's $600 for 3 days, but that's without certain taxes, I believe. Anyway, I could buy a used car for that amount (in the U.S.) that would work for at least a week. And I've heard gas is pretty high too even though Norway produces so much of it. So, I guess we'll have to think differently as far as getting around. That's now IF we go.

You can visit carsrentalnorway.com for hiring car in Norway. I think they will provide you car on rent at lower prices but must conform about this as one of my friend said they provide best car rental service at affordable prices.

We rented a car for 7 days last August from Hertz for $800 and that included starting in Oslo and dropping off in Stavanger. We were supposed to get an Audi 3 but ended up with a Volvo 70. I am guessing it is the small market issue for you as well. I looked every day for months before I reserved with Hertz.

In Finland me my dad and my uncle rented a tiny little compact skoda hatchback for 5 days, it was over $1300 and we were JAMMED in it and that was considered a deal

I just checked what a Nissan Micra would cost for five days in June in Finland,and the cost came out to $461 through Autoeurope. I sometimes wonder if reports of outrageous prices (and yes, Norway and I guess Finland are much more expensive than many other countries) reflects a walk-in business rather than an early-bird rental. If that is the case, it suggests that one should plan very early of car rentals. When it comes to Autoeurope, one can cancel up to three days before the rental date without penalty--but re-booking at a later date might increase the price of the rental.

I just check the price for June at Hertz in the Bergen airport and it's about $70 per day. There are a couple of add-ons that make it a little more. Figure out a way to do the rental without a drop-off.
I changed to a drop-off in Oslo, and it went up a total of about 120 usd. Gotta put your thinking cap on.

Wait till you see the cost of fuel!!

Buy a Volvo through overseas program. Get 10% off car price and then drive it around and then they ship it home. Oh yeah, they pay for flight over for 2 people as well, among other perks.

And you get the best souvenir ever!

Hertz does add a one-way fee in Norway, Europcar does not although the daily rate might be slightly higher--just my personal experience.

It's the different drop-off that jacks the price up to NOK 5000+. Bodø-Bodø would cost around NOK 1500 - 2000 for 3 days. High price of one-way rentals means no demand, which makes it expensive to get the car back to location, which makes one-way rental expensive.
