Car Rental Pickup Location Question

In July my Husband and I will be leaving Salzburg, Austria and heading to Garmisch-Partenkirchen area where we will be staying for 3 nights before heading to Rothenburg for 2 nights. We want to rent a car for the 3 nights in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and maybe use it to drive to Rothenburg.

My questions are where should we pick up the car in Germany, since I don't want to rent in Austria because of the potential fees for returning in Germany. Should we rent a car from a city on the train line and drive the remaining way or should we go back into Munich to rent the car and then drive the shorter distance? If we rent in Munich what is the best place/location to rent from (when I did a search so many locations came up in Munich, I was not sure where to rent from). If another town other than Munich is suggested, any driving route suggestions from that location would be appreciated!

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Rent in Freilassing, just over the border from Salzburg.

Hertz, Avis, Europcar, and Sixt all have locations right near the train station.

The small town that J62 suggested sounds good. It's probably easy to get to and easy to drive out of there.

I've noticed each time I rent with autoeurope I end up at the Avis office, so I'd bet you could get a reasonable deal with them in that city. Have fun, it's a beautiful area.

Hi,

Check with www.gemut.com

Ask for Andy Bestor. We booked our rental cars through them for our last 3 trips to Germany. I think you can pick up a car right by the train station in Garmisch.

If you do not plan to visit any sights between Salzburg and Garmisch, taking the train makes more sense.
You can get as cheap as around 25 euros for both you together from Salzburg to Garmisch on hourly regional trains (with one transfer at Munich Central station).

If you plan to see something in between, rent in Freilassing as it has been suggested.
