Car rental insurance in Italy
What kind of car insurance is advisable when I rent a car in Italy? What are the rates like for this type of insurance?
|
Will you use a credit card to rent the car? Many cards, check with yours, offer the necessary coverage at no additional cost.
|
Hi kdd,
Italy requirs that you take the CDW. This will leave you liable for 500-1500E depending on what car you rent. You can purchase Super CDW which has zero liability. www.novarentacar.com and www.autoeurope.com rates include the SuperCDW. ((I)) |
Beware of expecting your credit card to take over on your insurance in Italy. In other countries, you MUST decline the CDW in order for your credit card to become your primary insurer and then cover you. Since you cannot decline CDW in Italy, that becomes a very tricky issue. Do not consider doing so without consulting your credit card company specifically first.

What about Personal accident, Loss/Theft etc.? Are these recommended or can I do without these?
|
Hi kdd,
Go to www.autoeurope.com and www.novarentacar.com. They will tell you what is and is not covered. ((I)) |
This information is based on Avis rental in Florence Italy and a NWA Signature Visa card. I did have to contact Visa (1-800 VISA 911) for the correct informaiton.
Italy requires by law theft coverage (theft of the car) not CDW or any of the other coverages. According to Visa there is no conflict with my credit card coverages as long as I decline the CDW coverage. They know about the required theft coverage and it does not affect my card coverages. |
people should check their own credit cards. some carve out italy specifically. AMEX gold does not cover rentals in italy
