Car rental insurance

What do most of you travelers do about liability insurance when you rent a car in Europe? We have a gold credit card, and that covers damage to the car, but our GEICO policy says we aren't covered liability-wise for driving out of the country.

How do you all handle it?

If I read correctly my rental contract with Avis last summer, liability insurance is covered in the rental contract. I caled my Visa Gold supplier and was told that if I charged the whole contract on my Visa card, that collision and comprehensive coverage was provided in the card.
I rented from Hertz last week in Canada and liability insurance was included.
According to Amex (green, gold and platinum) the Car Rental Loss does not cover certain vehicles (SUV's and certain vans (more than 8 passenger). Make sure you read ALL the fine print in your contract.

Be sure you know the difference between the collision damage waiver and the liability insurance.

With my visa gold card, the CDW is covered by the card in many countries (but I don't think Italy or Ireland). Liability insurance isn't on my card, neither is it with my US auto insurance. SO when I rented a car this summer in England, I didn't have to pay for the collision, but did the liablity. There was also a basic liability insurance that was and an extra, higher liability - that would depend on how much you had to lose.

Ann,
Most European rental quotes include liability insurance, but be wise and check with the rental company as to how much.

Collision/comprehensive coverage is IMHO:
- a necessity,
- not included in most rental rates,
unless you ask for it,
- usually picked up by your credit card
company if you charge the rental w/the
card - but check w/the company first.
HTH--MJ Murphy
