Car rental in Scotland?
Does anyone have any tips on renting a car for an 11 day trip through Scotland? We will be flying into Glasgow (Renfrewshire not Prestwick) and I wish to know if there are any firms that I should avoid or any that are recommended. We have never driven in the UK so it looks to be an adventure, but I wanted to be certain that at least the renting part was non-worrisome. Thanks for any tips!

Tim, most of the big multinationals (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, etc) have rental desks at Glasgow airport so you should be OK there.

You might also want a look at easyCar. This is owned by the same firm as EasyJet and operated on the same principles - the earlier you book, the cheaper it is. They only offer Mercedes A Classes (smallish) but they start at around £7 per day. www.easyrentacar.com

Make sure you rent an automatic. Driving on the left is quite an adjustment; a stick shift will make it worse. We had a reservation in Edinburgh with Avis but when we arrived, the only automatic was under repair. Long story short, we rented from a LOCAL company and received a much better rate and a newer car. So IMHO, make a reservation with a big firm but check with local agencies for a better deal. Might try the Glasgow internet site.

Good point, Maxie. Local firms include Melvilles and (I think they're still going!) Mitchells Self Drive - also Arnold Clark, one of the big car dealers, do car rentals. Try a search on the UK Yellow Pages site www.yell.co.uk
