Car rental in Rome to drive to Sienna

Ok-- we need to be in Sienna by around 10am (to catch the bike race). The train won't get us there till noon.

Would it be crazy to rent a car IN rome? We are planning on driving around Tuscany-Umbria in a rental, but don't know if we should rent the car in Rome and drive to Sienna, or what??

Here is a link to the Giro d'Italia route for 2007:
http://www.steephill.tv/2007/giro-d-italia/

It looks to me like it doesn't go anywhere near Siena this year. When you watch it on t.v. you see miles of cars parked front end to bumper. I would think you would have to get where you are watching the race the night before or you'll never find parking, and they probably close the road to traffic by 6:00 a.m. if not earlier. I would try to pick somewhere you can leave your car at your hotel, and walk to where you'll watch the race.

Hi - we've rented cars from Avis in Rome a couple of times. We like the freedom of a car, so we rarely take a train during our travels. Renting the car was easy. Not a crazy idea at all. Of course, navigating your way out of Rome in the car can be an adventure.

Please check autoeurope.com for highly competitive, and often cheaper rates.

Note that a 6-day or 7-day rental is the same as a 5-day rental!
