car rental in Prague--international license?
 

Is one needed to rent a car in Prague? We are using Thrifty. Thanks for any help.

I don't think it's needed just to rent a car but I would ask Thrifty. But in either case I'm told it's good to have one in case you are stopped, as it serves as a translation of your licnese. The IDL is cheap and easy to get so why not just get one?

Agree with P_M. We always get an IDP for our driving trips [25] to Europe, required or not. Currently $22 dollars at a AAA, that includes the photo

Having had a not-at-fault accident in Slovakia, however, I highly recommend it. The cops stared quizically at my US license, but instantly recognized the IDL. I suppose it boils down to gambling that you won't have an accident, saving $20, and that you could easily afford the time and inconvenience of seeking out an English/Czech translator on your own in a foreign country.

Cars are all but useless in Prague.It has a great cheap integrated transport systems that in my opinion is the best of any city I have visited.use that.
If you need to go further afield there is a very good bus and train service which is also pretty cheap.

It's not a license (IDL). It's a permit (IDP). All it is is an official translation of your American license to various European ones. It's not required by law in the Czech Republic (and even if it were, it has nothing to do with renting a car), but it sure would be a good idea to have one in case you get into an accident or get stopped by the police - who are much less likely to speak/read English than police in, say, the Netherlands or France or Italy.
