Car Rental in Portugal/Spain Question

Hello,

My family and I will be traveling to Portugal February/March 2014 (we haven't decided which month yet) for about 2 weeks. We would fly into and out of Lisbon. We are interested in going to Seville, Spain. We would pick up the car at the Lisbon airport and return it to the same location. Do you know if there is a charge to bring the rental car into another country? Also, we are thinking about taking the ferry to Tangier from Tarifa. Does anyone know if they have parking at the ferry and what they charge to park there?

Thanks for any advice or suggestions!!

Hi rid,

I nearly always book through www.kemwel.com

You could ask them.

We rented a car in Barcelona and drove to Southern France, and the only restrictions I recall were that we could not take the car into Andora and had to have a spare pair of eye glasses in case we were stopped. That was for renting a car in Spain. Never had heard of that before. I don't know what restrictions would apply in your case since you wouldn't be renting the car in Spain.

There is no charge if you are renting through one of the international car rental companies, including brokers such as Auto Europe and Kemwel. You can check any of the agencies web sites for rental restrictions.

You can check out the following website regarding parking at or near the ferry terminal in Tarifa.

If you check on PAR site they tell you which rental companies include Spain insurance in rate and which don't (click Terms). Looks Budget & Avis charge and Europecar - doesn't http://www.portugal-auto-rentals.com/

We've never had any charge to take a rental car across European borders.

To clarify, the reason for not taking the car into Andora was due to the many accidents that occurred there, due to the twists and turns in the roads. They knew we were driving from Spain to France but there was no extra charge.

Spain requires that all vehicles carry an emergency reflective triangle and a reflective vest. You will get a fine if you don't have one.

My Spanish rental had one, I am not sure the vest is required in Portugal.

Travel restrictions vary, depending on the rental company, countries and car models.

Yes, they are required in Portugal. The law now is European Union for all countries.
I recommend http://www.algarveautorental.com I used some times now. They have very interesting promotions sometimes and some international good deals depending on the period and company you choose.
Enjoy

Vests are not required in all what you call European Union.
Visibility Vests are now compulsory in Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Norway, Portugal and Spain only
Every country has it's own driving rules. like with alcohol levels in the drivers blood.
Another instance of differences: Spanish registered cars have to have two triangles, where as if you drive a non Spanish registered car in Spain you only have to have one.

Posters should be careful on some recommendations here. Some of the companies recommended have little or no contact details on their websites. Not a good sign.
