Car Rental in Munich

We will be driving from Munich to Salzburg with a detour to Fussen for a tour of the castle. We are thinking of picking up our car at the train station...what rental companies are there? Any reccomendations?

Are you flying into Munich?

We rented from autoeurope.com last May, and it was cheaper to rent from an office downtown other than the airport or train station. They hooked us up with Avis.

Check with the rental agency you are considering renting from. We took the S-bahn from the airport to the Hauptbahnhof (main train station), and it was a 7 Euro taxi to the rental car agency (Avis), and the taxi didn't take any short cuts. There are several agencies around the town. Check the addresses on mapquest to see which one is closest and which one will give you the best deal. I just know that with autoeurope.com I could pick up the car at the train station, but it cost more.

Hi
We are renting this year through Autoeurope from Munich. We usually rent from the airport because, though it may cost more it is also easier to get out of Munich or any city we go to from the airport. After having some experiences years ago in Paris and Amsterdam trying to navigate, we decided the extra cost is worth it.

I rented from Budget in Munich this summer with no problems that I didn't create for myself. Their in-town site is about five blocks from a U-Bahn stop. Use www.maporama.com for locating places in Germany, as their maps include mass transit stops.

I rented from Hertz and picked up the car at the main train station. That was in 1998, I don't know if things have changed or not.

We have always gotten what we considered to be good deals from Gemulichkeit Travel Gemut.com from Bob Bestor. You don't have to join the website to rent from them. Give Bob and call and see what he can do for you.

Also, remember that cars picked up at airports and train staions in Germany carry a 19% surtax. There are lots of other places in Munich to pick up a car that are as accessable by U-Bahn, U-Bahn or Taxi.

Do you plan to drop the car in Salzburg or are you coming back to Munich. There are pretty heavy "drop fees" when you drop off a car in a different country thatn the one you rented it in.

The public transportation system in Munich is really good, so you ought to be able to find something away from the train station and easily accessible. We didn't drive in Munich, but the area around the train station didn't look like it would be fun in a car - LOL.

Contact Bob Bestor at Gemut as mentioned above. It may be possible to pick up in Munich and drop off in Salzburg without fees. Bob uses AutoEurope and sometimes is a little less than AE.

I've found gemut.com's prices for Germany lower than Auto Europe's, even tho their bookings are with AE. I think they have some sort of special deal with them. They are great to do business with. You deal with a live person who's got a lot rental car savvy, rather than some scripted order taker.
