Car Rental in Iceland
We are going to Iceland over New Year's Eve for about 6 days. Is it worth it to rent a car? I know it is expensive and I think we could do better with tours or other transportation when there. Thanks!

If you are expert driver, familiar with icy roads, during almost hurricane storms, in the dark, on gravel roads, sleet, rain, potholes, and are not in a hurry, then rent.
On the other hand why not wait untill you get here, and then decide?.

Prices on rented cars are normally lower around new years. You should be able to rent a small car for about 30 euros per day. That normally includes CDW (not to be confused with SCDW).
I would recommend that you shop around with companies that offer comparison between car rentals like www.carrentals.is, www.carhire.is, www.dohop.is or sites that use Cartrawler. You should quickly find the best available price. You can also try calling the companies and try to bargain, there are a lot of unused rental cars in winter season
Be vary of all the extras. Don't buy extra miles if you are staying within Reykjavik (and nearby), distances are short! The Golden circle is only about 300km so most times the included km's will do just fine if you rent for a few days.
You don't need to stock up on extra insurance either. In many cases our credit card company will have your back if you damage the car. Reading the CC small print, put that on your to-do list before traveling.
Hope this helps.

just wanted to let you know that we just got back from our 2 week trip to Iceland, we used Reykjavík Cars and the staff was really helpful, we picked the car up at the airport and it was a really nice car, we drove the circle and were happy with everything, we would rent a car from Reykjavík Cars again

by which I mean, andrew, that whatever you say, all you ever do is to post about a rental company, nothing else.
Why not tell us what you saw on this holiday? what did you like/dislike about Iceland? [apart from the hire car, of course, i think we know the answer to that].
Colduphere is about to go on a most interesting holiday to Iceland [along with some other folks] so I'm sure that he would appreciate your sharing your impressions.
