Car rental in Germany - insurance question

I will be renting a car for part of our trip to Germany and I have a question about auto insurance.

My auto insurance policy does not include overseas rental car insurance. My credit card does - $50K in damages to the car, loss of use, and theft. No liability coverage though.

I have never rented a car overseas - only in the US where I am covered by either my personal policy or my employer's policy. In those cases, I have always declined all coverage.

Am I correct that I need to accept the liability coverage from the rental company, but decline the loss damage waiver?

Yes, you won't get the car without accepting it.
CDW is entirely up to you.

J, we are also renting a car (in Kelsterbach) and was told by Andrew at Gemut.com to decline the CDW (we have it with our credit card). The car rental company covers third-party liability and fire. This is what I was told ... hopefully it's accurate. I've also read that the 'deny CDW coverage' box on the rental agreement is very very small and some people miss it.

It would be a criminal offense to give you a car without vaild liability insurance, so don't worry about this. It's always included in the price. You cannot opt-out on this.

Excellent. Thanks everybody. And I am glad to know that the liability coverage is included in the price of the rental. Nicer for the budget :)

You know how it is in the US - the rental rate is really low but if you need to buy the rental car company's insurance, the rate has basically doubled.
