Car rental in Florence Vs Sienna
We are planning to visit Tuscan country towns with Siena as our base for 2 days. We will be in Florence the day before and plan to rent a car the day we leave to Siena. After visiting Siena we will be leaving to Milan via Pisa.
My question: Is it advisable to rent a car in Florence on our way out to Siena and country towns(heard some good reviews about driving through chianti area) and return the car in Siena when we leave for Pisa? will that be an expensive option Vs renting and returning in Siena?
Also, are the train connections good from Siena to Pisa or should we come to Florence to get good connections?
Appreciate all your responses.
Thanks in advance

Are you certain that dropping the car off in Siena will cost you more? If it will be, I think it will be very easy to take the train from Florence to Siena, then renting the car.
I spent a couple weeks in Italy a couple years ago and most of my travel was on trains.. it was very easy and convenient. The train trip from Florence to Siena should be fairly quick too.
Sorry, I can't answer your question about the train connection from Siena to Pisa. Hopefully someone else knows the answer!

I think it makes more sense to rent and return the car to Florence. To go from Siena to Pisa by train you have to go through Florence anyway, and the train Siena-Florence is slower than driving.
There are many car rental sites near the train station in Florence. You leave the car there, walk five minutes to the station, and take the train to Pisa which is about 50 minutes.

Actually the Siena-Pisa train route is via EMPOLI (- not Florence). You would have to change train at Empoli.
Journey time Siena-Empoli-Pisa is about 1 hr 50'
For details see:

Hope this helps ...

oops, my mistake about the train connection.
Still, since putti mentioned that they want to rent the car in Florence, I still think it is better (= cheaper and about the same time involved) to return it in Florence. The drive from Florence to Siena is beautiful, I did it last year (don't take the fast highway but the slower road).
