Car Rental in Amalphi
We would like to rent a car in Amalphi but after searching the Internet it would seem you can only rent cars from Sorrento. As we would be coming from Capri to Amalphi by boat we would prefer not to have to go back to Sorrento to pick up a rental. We would only want to the rental car for a day or two to visit the small towns on the Amalphi Coast. Has anyone rented a car from Amalphi and if so could you provide the name of the company and a link to their website.
If car rental from Amalphi is not available, can anyone tell me from which town on the Amalphi coast should start from by bus to enjoy the scenery of the coastline to Solarno. We will be staying in Atrani. Thanks in advance for any help. |
I can't imagine that there are no car rental companies in Salerno -- which is on the Amalfi Coast (and do watch your spelling -- it can make a difference on various search engines).
That said, you couldn't pay me to use a car rather than public transportation on the Amalfi Coast. Good luck! |

When I was there -- way back in May of 2007 -- it was very easy to use a bus or ferry to go from town to town, but the time of year matters: Even when I was there, slightly off season, some of the buses were full and one might have to wait for the next. But that would, I think, affect cars, too -- if the roads are busy, the roads are busy!
I liked not having to worry about parking (and you would have to find a way to park your car if you want to stop and visit anything along that coast) and was willing to wait for the next bus or ferry as necessary. YMMV. Any decent guidebook should provide information about the costs of individual fares and passes -- and what you need to do to effectuate them. My experience is FAR too out-of-date to be useful on that front. :( |
The major rental companies are in Sorrento, but if you must, there are some local car rental companies in more central areas, like these
Noleggio auto - Rent Point B-Rent | Liberi di guidare | Noleggio auto Napoli e Milano |
Everyone says parking is a hassle in Amalfi towns - I've done Amalfi twice by bus and in the busy season buses were often gridlocked in traffic on the sinuous two-lane cliff-hugging roads along the coast. Cars can go no faster. And with buses you just hop of - no worrying about parking. (Though I noticed at Positano my buses only left people off above the town center - not sure if this is always the case.) I also found ferries really nice - the best views of all. Don't know about bus passes but the buses were dirt cheap.

You can definitely rent cars in Naples but driving there is terrifying!
