Car rental-Florence/Cinque Terre
 

I am having trouble deciding whether to rent a car or take the train from Florence. We are planning on renting a car for 2 days after our stay in Florence with our main destination to be the Cinque Terre villages. My tentative schedule is to drive the coast up to Portofino and down to Lerici on day 1. Then to hike a portion of the villages on day 2. Day 3 we must return the car to Florence and train to Rome. I'm not sure we even need a car. Would this itinerary be possible by train? Grazie!

Jody - A car would be unnecessary for that itinerary IMO. Train is more convenient for the 5-Terre. There is also a ferry service linking them in high season.<BR><BR>Portofino is a short bus or ferry ride from SML (or Rapallo).<BR><BR>You can catch a train to Rome from this area without returning to Florence.<BR><BR>Steve

I would definitely not rent a car. When we were there we took trains and boats everywhere. Others who drove had horror stories about some of the driving. Have a great trip! It's a wonderful spot.
