Car rental - Dublin to Kilkenny
 

We are arriving in Dublin on Saturday, late morning. We want to leave Sunday morning for Kilkenny.

When I contacted Dan Dooley for car rental, because it was the weekend, we could only pick the car up at the airport location. As it stands now, we will get the car when we arrive, attempt to drive to Kilhoran House downtown and park it until we are ready to leave in the morning.

Never having driven on the wrong side of the road, traffic issues etc. Would we be better off taking public transportation to our B&B then again back to the airport on Sunday, pick up the car on Sunday and head directly from the airport to Kilkenny?

In other words, is it easier to go around Dublin then navigate through it?

Like any major city, Dublin is best explored on foot or by public transportation. Why contend with heavy traffic and lack of parking? The bus between the airport and the city is very inexpensive. Why pay for an extra rental day you don't need? Most important, I think, is that your introduction to driving on the left be on roads with as little traffic as possible. Practice a bit on side roads around the airport before venturing onto the motorway. Finally, going around Dublin will be much easier and faster than going through it.

I think Tim covered it. Pick it up at the airport. I wouldn't want to have my first experience driving on the left be an adventure into Dublin.

Its trickey getting to Kilronan house as they have changed streets and many are one way etc. Also getting parking and paying the meter on sat is hassle (Free on Sunday most places not all. i doubt Kilronan has car parking. Pick it up Sunday. You can get the express airport Bus for 7.00 each to the airport and it stops at a few hotels on the way. They will be able to say where to catch this at the B&B.

Well, this is weird???
I called Dooley's to change the pick-up date for the car and she talked me out of it! Said there would be no difference in car rental cost since I got the week rate.

She said she thought it would be better to get the car Sat. and if we didn't want to try driving downtown, park it at the airport or they could tell us a place we could park it outside the city.

Will call back again, hopefully get someone else - can't see spending the money to park it when I can just pick it up the next day - as I said, weird!

I take it that you are staying for one week and you have booked the car for the week. If so you will get a rate that is cheaper then a daily rate *6. Why not do the paper work for the car on Saturday, ask the rental company to hold on to it until Sunday and bobs your uncle problem solved.
