Car Rental Drop Off in Rome

I plan to drive from Florence to Rome via Tuscany.

I would like to drop off the car (Hertz) in an area near Rome where I avoid the complicated city driving of Rome and spend less in taxi fare than dropping the car off at the airport.
Any suggestions?

Hi BS,

Orvieto comes to mind.

If Hertz has an office there, you could drop off the cr, see the town and take the train to Rome - abt 1 hr.

See www.trenitalia.com for schedules.

Have you checked rental rates at www.novarentacar.com and www.autoeurope.com

There is a car rental area in Borghese Park, which is a short drive from the autostrada, and you don't get hung up in Rome traffic. Check it out.

Actually most agencies have drop offs very near Termini Station. It is surprisingly easy to drive into the city to there, no small intricate streets, but rather wide and well marked ones. Just make sure you have directions to the drop off point in advance. And of course, it is then easy to get a taxi there.

We did as Ira suggests and returned in Orvieto. Hertz is just across from the train station. The train ride to Rome was about 1 hour.

We have returned a car at Rome Termini. Not a big deal really except one little caveat, there are special bus lanes and if you drive in one like we did you may find that there are police who are happier to give you a ticket rather than directions to the rental return area. So if you are standing facing Termini, the side street going along the LEFT side of the station is where the rental car offices are.

Hi BethStan
Four years ago we drove from Florence and stopped in Tuscany and then drove into Rome .. From Tuscany we took the route towards Grossetto and followed it right down to the Fuminico Airport. It was all Highway and I drove while my husband read the map and gave directions. Left the car off and then we took a cab to our hotel into Rome

Hope this helps.

It is pretty easy to drop a rental car off at Fiumicino and then to take a train into Rome, unless you are carrying considerable luggage. The one caveat is that the drop off facility at the airport is on the 4th floor of a car park. Signage is terrible. The one sign we saw, too late, is mounted on the edge of the left hand lane leading to the airport terminal.
We paid 50 euro for our trip from the airport to our Rome hotel.
