Car Rental at Roma Termini
 

We will be arriving the Roma Termini on Sat., 4/28/12 at 2:00 p.m. Are the car rental companies located adjacent or close to the train station?

Is it difficult to drive through the city on a Saturday afternoon to get onto the autostrada (A91-A-12-SS1)? Our final destination is Porto Santo Stefano.

We wil be returning the car to the Roma Termini on Sunday morning, May 6th. Hopefully, traffic will be light.

Personally speaking, I wouldn't even try to attempt this.

You might have better luck driving from the airport.

You can take the 30 minute train to the airport. All the rental agencies will be there, in one location more or less.

I've pretty much driven in every country in Western Europe, including Italy, but I won't drive in Rome. Paris, London, Zurich, Madrid, etc... yes, Rome NO.

There are about a dozen car rental outfits at Roma Termini.

Rastaguytoday, OK, so we take the Leonardo Express into Fiumicino. Are the rental cars easily accessible or is it a long walk?

I generally use Hertz in Europe because their rates are comparable, their service is good and they tend to overlook the minor dings from car renting.

As I read your posts, you won't be near the airport. In that case, I see no point in going there to rent a car. The car rental agencies aren't particularly close to the trains at FCO, and I find FCO a pain in the neck.

Don't make a special trip to the airport.

I really hate driving in or out of central Rome, but I'm alive and here to say we've done it.

Where are you training in from? Perhaps someone can suggest a route that lets you skip renting in central Rome.

That morning, we will take the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento to Naples Centrale, then the Eurostar onto Roma Termini. Arrival in Rome is 2:10 p.m.

Just on the FCO car hire point. This is easy and driving from and to FCO is also easy. If I had your choice I would go to FCO as recommended. You actually pass the car hire place as you go from the arrivals departures to the station. It is a pedestrian walkway. It is directly connected to the car park which is where you pick up/collect your car.
Many years ago we booked to pick up Motorail from Rome and I was not looking forward to it. After booking we found you could get on the same train in Livorno. I was very happy to pay the booking change fee to avoid driving in Rome.

Call me crazy, but I would get my car in Sorrento and miss all of those connections and schlepping bags. You will get to PSS much faster and easier IMHO. I have rented at Termini but would not do it again except on Sunday.

I am kane - you could get the train all the way to Orbetello if you wanted, but I couldn't find any car hire there, so it's not very practical.

however, you could go to Viterbo and rent from there - i had a look via google and you can rent with Avis there, and Sixt.

but i think that I would probably go to the airport as already suggested - fewer things to go wrong, eg it'll be open longer hours, and have a better choice of cars. it's only about 150 kms drive to Porto santo stefano, and a straight run up the coast, so you should be there in a couple of hours. the only problem might be that that area is very popular with romans at weekends, so the traffic may be heavier than normal.

just take your time in the car hire place - we always get ourselves into a mess too!
