Car rental: are there age restrictions?

I am in my late 70s with a clean driving record. Friends told us we cannot rent a car in Europe once we have passed a certain age. Is this true? If so, what are the age restrictions?

There are, but they are different between countries and in some even there are not. If you tell us where countries are you going maybe we can help you better.

Dear Tuck, We have returned from our trip to Bavaria and I thought you would like to know the details.
No problem renting a car from NOVA because of my 76 years of age . I rented a Compact and was upgraded to a mini SUV w/AC at no extra cost. Drove 1400 miles.

Ireland is the toughest on age restrictions.
