car rental and day trips from Florence
Message: Will be going to Florence next week. Hope to spend 2 or so days wandering the Tuscan countryside not so far from the city. Any recommendations for mountain towns within a few hrs of the city (2-3 hrs)?

Also, where we rent a car in Florence? I've seen some good deals from airport-based car rental operations, but wonder if there's a more convenient option in the city so we don't have to schlep back out to the airport.

thx, ej, NYC.

There are car rentals just south of the train station on Borgo Ognisanti and Via Finiguerra. There's Hertz, Maggiore, Budget, Avis, etc. Basically, wander. There are so many towns and walled towns it would be impossible to list. Get a good map and just go. Two to three hours covers a lot of space in Italy.

Be aware that it is very hard to find a good rental rate for a one or two day rental. If you can plan your trip to benefit from having the car for three days or more, you will find that three costs about the same as one or two.

Best wishes,

Rex
Right north of Florence you will find Apennini, mountains of moderate height that run all along Italy. You can either move northwest and reach the area north of Pistoia, which is dotted with small and nice towns, or move east and head toward the Futa pass and Valdichiana. All these areas are very nice and no more than one hour from Florence. Yet, if you want really high mountains you will not find any unless you travel for much longer than 3 hours and reach the Alps.
