Thank you all for such great information. My husband and I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains and are very used to driving "scary" roads. We found the Amalfi Coast road very much like some coastline roads here in Northern California. But, I am grateful to be forewarned. We used AutoEurope in Italy and we were very happy with the service. Again, thanks to all for such needed information.

Akin, just for comparison, we have driven the Amalfi highway several times and wondered what all the fuss was about. But my partner turned pale driving the road to Oia and said he'd never do it again. He does a fear of heights which never bothered him on various Santa Cruz roads (his niece lives in Boulder Creek) or even on the Amalfi Drive. Driving to Oia was another matter. He seriously wanted to take a bus back to Fira and call the rental car company to come pick up the car until I explained the drive back would put us much more on the "inside" rather than the outside of the drive.

I've lived in Santa Cruz, Ben Lomond and Boulder Creek in my past. Small world, isn't it? Feels like 'old home week'. There's no comparing the roads since Hwy. 9 is well-engineered with guard rails. You have a sense of being closed in and protected by the redwoods, not driving along the edge of a high precipice. I've never been to the Amalfi Coast, but I have seen it in photos, and it does look similar, except the road to Oia is much more primitive with less protection. If one has a fear of heights it would probably be a nightmare. Otherwise, normal caution will see you through. And don't forget the secondary road if you need it.

Neopolitan and Brotherleelove2004, thanks for that additional scoop. We are going to take a cab from the airport upon arrival in Santorini, so we will get a chance to check out the drive. I am somewhat afraid of heights and sometimes close my eyes on very steep roads with no railing. My husband is fine driving those kinds of roads. We were on a road on the northwest side of Maui that was treacherous with the locals not giving us any room while they drove past us in the opposite direction. Lee, we live in Ben Lomond, my husband commutes Highway 9 to work daily. So, when we pick-up a rental, Iíll make sure we get a small car. I appreciate the warning and the alternate road information.

I commuted into Santa Cruz on Hwy. 9 from both Ben Lomond and from 6 miles the other side of Boulder Creek (McGaffigan Mill Rd.). I can't begin to count how many times I've driven that road!!!
